The 3nd annual North American Simulation Technology Conference (NASTEC) aims at bridging the information gap in research and improving scientific exchanges between Europe and North-America. For this reason EUROSIS has set up the NASTEC conference, which aims to provide an insight into the latest hot research topics in the field of modeling and simulation. As such every year has another main theme, in order to address the latest developments in the field.

The intent of the NASTEC'2010 event is to nurture the spirit of cooperation and strive to improve the quality of life in this global village through excellence in Hybrid Soft Computing Research and Education by Engineering of Next-Generation Intelligent Hybrid Soft Computing Systems for Modeling, Simulation, Software Engineering and Web Computing at the service of humankind. According to Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh (University of California, Berkley, USA) "It may be argued that is Soft Computing rather than Hard-Computing that should be viewed as the foundation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)"

NASTEC'2010 will give European and North-American researchers and practitioners the opportunity to gather, network, present and discuss their work, foster links, enhance existing working and friendly relations and establish new ones. The event aims to give scientists and practitioners from academic, government and industrial institutions the opportunity to learn about this new area of Soft Computing and discuss the existing and potential Synergies and Applications of Soft Computing Technologies in connection with Modeling, Simulation, Software Engineering and Web Computing. This will definitely promote and boost collaboration with research labs and hi-tech industries active in the field of Soft Computing both in Europe and North-America.

All submissions are reviewed by the programme committee and will be original research never before published. The core of the conference is the paper presentations where people will have the opportunity to present their research to others from around the world.

Modeling, Simulation and Soft Computing Educator's Track

The Educator's Track is intended as a forum in which educators and trainers can meet to discuss pedagogy, use of technology and share their experience pertaining to Modeling, Simulation and Soft Computing (MS&SC).

Modeling, Simulation, Soft Computing approaches and technologies raise the level of abstraction and thus improve our abilities to resolve complex systems in incomplete, random, uncertain and imprecise environments.

Putting this vision into practice requires not only sophisticated MS&SC approaches and tools, but also considerable training and education effort. Practitioners in industry and education/training specialists need to understand the principles underlying MS&SC, and the strengths and limitations of current MS&SC tools, techniques. Such understanding is needed for proper selection and use of MS&SC technologies to resolve complex industrial and business problems.

Industry is striving to improve their practice by adopting MS&SC. The adoption, nevertheless, is determined by the availability of skilled Simulationists, Modelers and Soft Computing Engineers who have been educated and trained in MS&SC. MS&SC educators and trainers can influence the practices in Business and industry by producing an increasing number of graduates with deep understanding of MS&SC principles, technologies and challenges.
The Educator's Track, the premier Track (in International Conferences) devoted to the topic of Educational issues of MS &SC, is intended as a forum in which educators and trainers can meet to discuss pedagogy, use of technology in the classroom, and share their experience pertaining to teaching MS &SC. We would like to focus discussions on the resources needed to effectively educate future MS&SC practitioners. In particular, we would like to hear about efforts on developing community-based MS&SC education resources, that is, resources that allow educators in the MS&SC community to share, evaluate, and evolve education artifacts. These artifacts should be based upon synergies between industrial needs and academic education and research goals. We encourage papers on the following topics:
* Education artifacts that can be effectively shared through a community-based MS&SC resource
* Descriptions of existing community-based MS&SC education resources
* Plans for developing and maintaining community-based education resources
We also encourage papers of general interest, including papers on:
* Designing university courses at various levels with industrial needs in mind
* How to include industrial experiences into teaching MS&SC
* How to ensure and assess industrial relevance of the contents of MS*SC courses
* How to assess industrial relevance of the teaching/learning process
* How the teaching of MS&SC techniques influences industrial practices
* Methodology issues (how to teach MS&SC) with industry in mind
* Integrating MS&SC into the computer science and software engineering curriculum (how do they fit)
* Teaching MS&SC and associated tools (available tools and environments)
* Experience reports from designing university courses in MS&SC with industrial focus
* Requirements from industry for university education in MS&SC

* Case studies on required skills for realizing the vision of MS&SC.

Reality Mining and Surprise Modelling

While on the one hand reality mining, is all about paying attention to patterns in life and using that information to help [with] things like setting privacy patterns, sharing things with people, notifying people; basically, to help you live your life. On the other hand, surprise modelling is a new concept which combines data mining and machine learning to help people do a better job of anticipating and coping with unusual events. Combining massive quantities of data, insights into human psychology, and machine learning can help manage surprising events. The machine used has to have both knowledge--a good cognitive model of what humans find surprising--and foresight: some way to predict a surprising event in time for the user to do something about it.(f ex. by using SmartPhlow)
And putting these two together will help researchers at getting better at making sense of all that information which has been presented to them.

POSTER SESSION

The poster session only features work in progress. Next to the actual poster presentation, these submissions also feature as short papers in the Proceedings.

STUDENTS SESSION
This session is for students who want to present their work in progress or part of their doctoral thesis as a paper. Student papers are denoted by the fact that only the name of the student appears on the paper as an author. They are published as short papers in the Proceedings.

DIVERSE ACTIVITIES
For demonstrations or video sessions, please contact EUROSIS. Special session will be set up for vendor presentations in coordination with the scientific program. User Group meetings for simulation languages and tools can be organised the day before the conference. If you would like to arrange a meeting, please contact the Conference Chairs. We will be happy to provide a meeting room and other necessary equipment.

Exhibition
There will be a special exhibition section for universities and non-profit organisations, and a special section for publishers and commercial stands.

Registration fees should preferably be paid in EUROs, but can
also be paid in the equivalent amount of US$.Payment is possible by Creditcard.The registration fee includes one copy of the Conference Proceedings, coffee and tea during the breaks, all lunches, a welcome cocktail, the conference dinner and conference visit.



Author Registration
Authors are expected to register early (at a reduced fee) and to attend the conference at their own expense to present the accepted papers.
Without early registration and payment, the paper will not be published in the Conference Proceedings. Each registration covers one presentation.

PAPER SUBMISSION TYPES

FULL PAPER (including abstract, conclusions, diagrams, references, at least five pages, double column)
During review, the submitted full papers can be accepted as a regular 5 page paper. If excellent, full papers can be accepted by the program committee as an extended (8-page) paper. Each submission will be reviewed by at least three members of the International Program Committee.

EXTENDED ABSTRACT (at least five pages, single column)
Participants may also submit a 5 page extended abstract for a regular (5 pages) or short (3 pages) paper or poster, which will be reviewed by the International Program Committee. All accepted papers will be published in the NASTEC'2010 Conference Proceedings.

SHORT ABSTRACT (at least three pages)
Participants may also submit a 3 page abstract for a short paper or poster, which will be reviewed by the International Program Committee. All accepted papers will be published in the NASTEC'2010 Conference Proceedings.

ONE PAGE ABSTRACTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Refereeing and Camera-ready papers
The notification of acceptance or rejection, in combination with suggestions to improve the paper, will be sent by JUNE 30, 2010.
Along with the notification of acceptance, an author kit with complete instructions for preparing a camera-ready copy for the Proceedings will be sent to authors of accepted abstracts or drafts. The camera-ready copy of the papers must be in by AUGUST 1, 2010. In order to guarantee a high-quality conference, the camera-ready papers will be checked as well, to check see the suggestions of the program committee have been incorporated.

The conference itself is held at the Digipen Institute of technology, in Redmond a suburb of Seattle best known for being the home of Microsoft and Nintendo of America.
