Extended Call for Papers: Fourteenth International Robert Graves Conference | Deadline 31 March 2018

Robert Graves and Europe: Good-bye to All That / But It Still Goes On

La Caixa, Palma, Mallorca

10-14 July 2018

Organised by the Robert Graves Society with the Fundació Robert Graves

Plans are becoming advanced for the 14th International Robert Graves Society Conference, 10th - 14th July 2018. The theme this year will be:

'Robert Graves and Europe: Good-bye to All That / But It Still Goes On'

The timings of the conference are likely to be Tuesday, 10th July 2018, 5.00 pm (approx) -– Saturday, 14th July 2018, 2:00 pm (approx).

The Robert Graves Society is pleased to announce that the Fourteenth International Robert Graves Conference will be held at La Caixa, Palma, Mallorca, from 10 July to 14 July 2018. The theme of the conference will be ‘Robert Graves and Europe: Good-bye to All That / But It Still Goes On’.

‘If Europe ever became sufficiently civilized to dispense with customs officers and police, which are the external manifestations of international mistrust and dislike...’ This brief aside on what a civilized Europe might look like in future is from a translation by Robert Graves published in 1956. The text Graves translates – George Sand’sUn Hiver à Majorque (Winter in Majorca) – is itself a complex demonstration of cultural misunderstanding across borders, cultures and languages through which Graves as translator proves an entertainingly mischievous travel guide. The conference will explore any aspect of Graves and Europe, from his own life and work in Mallorca, to the relevance of his writing for our European present and future.

Keynote speakers include Fran Brearton, Patrick McGuinness, Jean Moorcroft Wilson and Michael Schmidt. Robert Graves conferences traditionally embrace the creative in addition to the critical, and the conference will also host musical and literary events to be announced in due course. At the previous Palma conference in 2014 readings were given by, amongst other eminent writers, Ruth Fainlight, David Harsent, Michael Longley, and Sean O’Brien.

The conference will take place at the former Gran Hotel, Palma de Mallorca, where Graves and Riding stayed on their arrival in Palma in 1929, and at Deià, where they lived until 1936. Graves returned to Mallorca in 1946 with Beryl Pritchard Graves and their family and lived in Deià until his death in 1985.

The hotel is now the Caixa Cultural, a cultural centre in Palma run by La Caixa, a major Catalan and Spanish bank. This will be the fifth Robert Graves conference to be held there and at Deià since the centenary conference in Mallorca held in 1995. We are most grateful to La Caixa bank and staff at Caixa Cultural for their continued support.

More details of the event and the present CFP are published at http://www.robertgraves.org/society/index.php?id=47, A link to a registration page is also there. Accommodation options are being arranged and will be published online soon.
