First Workshop on Advanced Virtual Environments and Education — WAVE2 2018 (http://wave.cin.ufpe.br/2018) in conjunction with the 24th CIAED Congresso Internacional ABED de Educação a Distância — CIAED 2018 (http://www.abed.org.br/hotsite/24-ciaed/), October 04–05, 2018, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil.
The WAVE2 is a joint organization of the Special Commission on Informatics in Education of the Brazilian Society of Computing (SBC) and the Brazilian Association of Distance Education (ABED). With it, they aim to bring together world-class research that addresses, with a high standard of quality, issues relevant to open education and Brazilian distance in order to effectively contribute to the advancement of international knowledge about the themes and their impact on Brazilian practice.
Considering the transdisciplinary nature of the phenomena of open and distance education, the two scientific societies understand that collaboration between researchers from related communities progressively improve research on aspects related to technology-mediated education.
This year, WAVE2 2018 will take place in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Its organization will be shared with the Cognitive Sciences and Educational Technologies Group (CCTE), at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).
Target audience to the workshop brings together educational researchers, technologists and, experts in a multidisciplinary forum to collaboratively define the various skills, methods, techniques, processes and, frameworks needed for fostering the adoption of learning design and thus to stimulate targeted research.
Keywords: learning design, skills, competencies, continuous professional development, design thinking, service design, authoring tools, teacher communities, co-design, group concept mapping.

SUBMISSIONS FORMATS
— — — — — —
English, Portugues and Spanish are the languages of the conference and of all submissions.
There are only two formats:
- Research paper (full paper)
- Research-in-progress (short paper)
- Plenary Lectures
Authors interested that their article is considered for a later publication of the highlighted works must present their works in English. All submissions must be written in English and contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses. Submissions should follow the standard SBC format (Microsoft Word and LaTeX templates are available at) and submitted via SBC JEMS at https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/wave2018
All proposals for articles must be anonymous, not containing the name of the author (s) or institution (s) of the author (s). These data should be reported only in the online submission form.
We invite proposals of the following kind addressing conference themes:
- Research report (full paper)
- Concept and main idea (short paper)
- Plenary Lectures
Papers presented in the Research report category (full paper) should show results with substantial progress in empirical or theoretical research, ongoing projects, discussions on the state of the art, relevant aspects, case studies, implemented experiments, methodologies, innovations and other products that to foster the academic discussion of WAVE2’s areas and lines of work.
Each individual paper proposal should take the form of a Research report (full paper) of up to 8 pages maximum (including references). The WAVE2 Organisers collects all papers from the authors, and precedes them with an outline of the symposium, stating title/theme and providing a rationale for the symposium. Symposia organisers are free to decide on how their Symposium is run e.g. as an interactive panel-participants discussion; ‘traditional’ presentation of papers with short questions and answers; some other method.
The papers presented in the Concept and main idea category (short paper) should analyze or describe innovative research in progress and work with preliminary results. All work in this category should follow the recommendations that are published on the Conference website.
Each short paper proposal should take the form of a Full Paper with a minimum of 2 pages and maximum of 4 pages (including references).
An invited Plenary Lectures consists of a mini-conference. We invite senior scientists who have a special interest in a specific conference topic to take responsibility for an invited session, gathering papers from a range of research expertise around the world. If you would like to submit a proposal for an Invited Session, please contact:
Acceptance or rejection of the works will be notified to the authors by email, according to the following dates.
Rejected works can be recommended to be published in the main CIAED proceedings.

PRESENTATION AND EXCHANGE DYNAMICS
— — — — — —
The event wishes to constitute itself as a space for exchanges and debates. Understanding the importance of intellectual exchanges are important for rescheduling ongoing research and for training new generations of researchers.
In this sense, all presentation of research report and oral communication takes place in a single room with participation of all participants. The objective is to allow the participants’ collective to actively act to raise the quality of the research presented to a world-class standard. At such times, more experienced researchers are invited to mentor works in progress.

PUBLICATION
— — — — — —
Accepted papers will appear in the Proceedings of the CEIE conferences that will be published in the SBC CEIE Digital Library at http://www.br-ie.org/pub/.
The authors of the best selected papers will be invited to extend them for publication in international journals indexed by ISI/SCI, SCOPUS, ESCI and DBLP, among others, such as:
- Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET)
- Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM)
- International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction (IJTHI)

CONFERENCE AWARDS
— — — — — —
WAVE2 2018 is pleased to make a number of awards for contributions showing outstanding merit and deserving recognition to the Best Conference Paper award
