Call For Papers

We invite Roundtable Panelists for a Special Session at the 2018 SAMLA conference held November 2-4 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Scaling All Barriers: De-Marginalizing Socio-Political Activists and Their Allies Through Writing Opportunities Across Disciplines:

Works such as The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, written by a biology major turned science writer turned best-selling author, and recent guest editorials from the survivors of the Parkland school shooting demonstrate that writing from multiple disciplines de-marginalizes. Emerging student activists in particular can harness writing to effect change no matter their reason for activism. Social media, blogs, and other digital tools provide increasing opportunities for sharing socio-political writing with broad audiences. As a result, all educators regardless of discipline have the opportunity to offer students authentic writing opportunities and help them find their voice.

This roundtable welcomes participants and submissions on any experiential or research based aspect of creating authentic writing opportunities across disciplines. Proposals addressing the conference theme are especially welcome, and STEM experts interested in creating writing opportunities in their fields are strongly encouraged to apply.

By June 1, 2018, at 11:59 PM PST, please submit a bio (100 words or less) indicating experience with the subject, a description (150 words or less) of the project, idea, etc. you plan to share during the roundtable, and any A/V requests to Josef Vice or Teresa Marie Kelly, Purdue University Global via this link https://goo.gl/forms/ziudHxbLGDtDJqfn1

Any questions? Email Josef Vice, MA, at jvice@PurdueGlobal.edu or Teresa Marie Kelly, MAT, at tkelly@PurdueGlobal.edu. Please put SMLA Roundtable in the subject line.
