Workshop theme

Data integration is one of the most critical tasks in computer-based data management. It is important both when harmonizing independent, uncoordinated threads of system development and when integrating formerly separated data sources. Ambient data integration places an emphasis on integrating data across embedded, context aware, personalized devices that can adapt to rapidly changing environments.

Ambient data integration places particular constraints on traditional data integration challenges, such as the creation and maintenance of mappings between source and target data schemata. For example, the spatiotemporal aspects of ADI as well as the dynamic nature of the data can impact the ontologies and knowledge bases used to perform semantically driven data integration. In addition, the conceptual modeling of data becomes increasingly important when attempting to integrate data from an ecology of devices that frequently utilize different metadata standards. As devices grow smaller, and are more connected and integrated into our environment, data integration solutions must adapt to limitations in CPU capabilities, memory capacities, and network bandwidth. And finally, new challenges in graphical user interface development, computer security and privacy arise when integrating data in an ambient computing context.

This OTM workshop will focus on the aspects of data integration that are particularly challenging in an ambient computing environment. We will bring together researchers and practitioners in the field of data integration and ambient intelligence to exchange ideas of how to benefit from each other's techniques and experiences. We want to include conceptual, technical and application-oriented solutions in the workshop program.

• Computer security and privacy in data in integration systems
• Data integration in the context of the Semantic Web

Applications, evaluations and implementations in the following domains are of major interest:

• Health care
• Life sciences
• Biodiversity informatics
• Geographical information

However, presentations of generally applicable concepts from any application domain are also welcome.

Submission guidelines

All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, clarity of expression, and relevance to IFIP WG 2.12 & WG 12.4. All submissions must be in English, and will be refereed by a program committee comprising members of the Working Group. Research submissions must not exceed 10 pages following the Springer format. Submissions should be made in PDF format. Detailed formatting instructions can be found at:

The final proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag as LNCS (pending approval). Failure to commit to presentation at the conference automatically excludes a paper from the proceedings.

Organisation of the workshop

We plan to have an invited talk on the workshop's core topic followed by 2-3 sessions with about 8-10 paper presentations. The workshop will conclude with a discussion forum which will be constituted by the presenters of the papers. This forum will preferably be organized as a so-called Advocatus Diaboli Forum in order to better stimulate discussion.
In order to establish a "common thread" throughout the workshop each presenter will be asked to provide his/her individual view on the state of the art in data integration and especially on their experience applying conceptual modeling techniques in that domain.
