Sustainable communities are defined by being active, inclusive and safe, fair for everyone, environmentally sensitive, well served, accessible and with a flourishing and diverse local economy. The development of virtual and real sustainable communities can be supported by communication technology. In this sense, the first Interdisciplinary Workshop on Communication for Sustainable Communities (IWCSC) intends to discuss how communication aspects may support ecological, socio-cultural and economical issues within the sustainable development of these communities. Moreover, the workshop will discuss sustainable aspects in the design, development and use of communication technologies and the creation of the built environment.
IWCSC will address the intersections between technological, sociological and aesthetic issues pertinent to communication as generator of sustainable community development. The workshop will be an interdisciplinary forum to discuss innovative communication solutions and paradigms that can enhance sustainable community development. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Theories and approaches for designing, developing and using communication tools to promote sustainability in communities. * Semantic and Social media in sustainable community development. * New sustainable communication channels (haptic, spatial, aural). * Cultural and cross-cultural approaches to communication. * Equitable and accessible approaches to communication. * Ecological, socio-economic and political aspects of communication for communities development. * Adaptable and adaptive communication for sustainable communities. * Models for sustainable urban community development. * Communication technologies and geolocated communities (nomad, collocated and dislocated). * Communication aspects for encouraging participation and collaboration in sustainable practices. * Measurements and characteristics for the success of sustainable community communication. * The workshop will be accepting submissions of papers exposing technical solutions, mature artistic explorations or sociological studies exploring new approaches to communication as foundation for sustainable community development. Participants should register for SIGDOC 2010. One-day registration is available on the SIGDOC'10 website at http://sigdoc.org/2010. We invite practical approaches, empirical findings, proposals and research results that address aspects of communication for sustainable communities. Position and theoretically grounded discussions about the topics of interest, as well as mature aesthetic explorations, are also welcome. Papers must be full format (6 - 8 pages), in the ACM SIG format. Submissions must contain original contributions and include unpublished results. The submission instructions will be available in the workshop website at http://iwcsc.com. Selected papers will be published in the CEUR Workshop Proceedings (http://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/Publications/CEUR-WS/). Contact by e-mail: organizers@iwcsc.com |
