Call For Papers

Neohelicon
University of Szeged
Hungarian Comparative Literature Association

Neohelicon celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023. Half century is undeniably a remarkable achievement for a humanities journal, and Neohelicon is proud of its contribution to the history of comparative literature. To commemorate this milestone, an international academic conference will be held in
Szeged, Hungary on August 28-30, 2023.
Neohelicon has the subtitle Acta Comparationis Litterarum Universarum, which was the Latin title of the world’s first journal on comparative literature, published in Kolozsvár (1877-1888), edited by two professors of that university, Sámuel Brassai and Hugó Meltzl. Neohelicon cherishes the local, Central-European tradition of comparative literature. The University of Szeged is the legal successor of the Kolozsvár University, which is one of the reasons it happily hosts the event. The founding editor of Neohelicon, György Mihály Vajda, was also the founder of the Complit Department at Szeged. The journal, therefore, is deeply rooted with and has been continuously connected to that beautiful town.
In the conference, research papers should be presented that are connected to Neohelicon’s half-century history and should revisit or further elaborate a topic among the numerous thematic issues, clusters or mini-clusters, or even a single but especially important paper from the journal. Any topic ever discussed in Neohelicon can be revisited, but we would like to mention some topics or special issues that we think worth revisiting:
Youth in literature (1985/2)
Literatures of regions or areas (among others both issues of 1996)
Ecocritical approaches to literature (2009/2, 2017/2)
Concepts of world literature (2011/2)

For further ideas, visit https://www.springer.com/journal/11059.
Abstracts of 150-250 words, with an indication of the presenter’s name and affiliation should be submitted to Neohelicon50.Szeged@gmail.com before March 31, 2023.
The languages of the conference are English, French, and Hungarian.
