Kant’s Transcendental Dialectic: A Re-Evaluation

DESCRIPTION

The Transcendental Dialectic was for a long time an insufficiently studied section of the Critique of Pure Reason. This is surprising, given that division two of the Transcendental Logic forms the largest part of Kant’s first Critique. Concentrating on the destructive side of Kant’s critical project, Kant’s critics and interpreters seem to have established an exegetical paradigm that left his positive account of transcendental ideas and metaphysics out of focus. With recent decades, however, there has come a huge wave of re-evaluation of the structure and function of the Transcendental Dialectic. The “other side” of the Transcendental Dialectic, and the role of metaphysics in science and more generally, have rightfully claimed their place among the most central topics in Kant research.

This topical issue will be the first to cover all main aspects of recent debates on Kant’s Transcendental Dialectic, such as the role of the regulative ideas in the sciences, the deduction of their validity, their logical determination by twelve categories, the transition from everyday rationality to metaphysics, the role of transcendental idealism, and Kant’s general account of different kinds of ideas (such as aesthetical, practical, political, religious, and architectonic) and its importance for contemporary debates on reason. Hence the emphasis of our discussion of the Transcendental Dialectic is on the introduction, the first book, and the appendix, but also on the function that the second book plays in this context.

This issue is an ideal platform for discussing recent and innovative topics and positions concerning Kant’s Dialectic, bringing together top researchers with promising early-stage Kant scholars. The goal is to highlight the capacity of the Dialectic to raise metaphysical problems based on Kant’s critical project, and ultimately to emphasize its potential for current debates.


HOW TO SUBMIT

Submissions will be collected from September 1 to October 31, 2021. There are no specific length limitations.

All contributions will undergo critical review before being accepted for publication.

Because Open Philosophy is published under the Open Access model, as a rule, publication costs should be covered by so called Article Publishing Charges (APC), paid by authors, their affiliated institutions, funders or sponsors.
