Scope and Aims:

Currently, technical difficulties and economic issues associated with installing and maintaining instrumentation in civil infrastructure systems have hampered the large-scale implementation of new sensing and monitoring methods on major urban infrastructure systems. Moreover, day-to-day collection of information on such public assets is extremely costly and requires significant manpower. These issues have been exacerbated by the spread of urbanization and have created a market for ‘smart city’ technologies and software platforms. It is estimated that the development of smart cities will remain on the center stage as one the most important challenges and opportunities for city planners and managers and for researchers and technology providers over the next few decades. The next generation smart cities will be heavily dependent on their smart infrastructure integrated with information and communication technologies. Distributed structural sensing and monitoring systems are arguably vital components of smart infrastructure. In a typical smart city sensor model, smart sensor networks serve as autonomous intelligent nodes to measure a variety of physical or environmental parameters. The sensor networks should react in time, establish automated control, and collect information for intelligent decision-making. The intent of this book is to invite scholars, researchers, engineers and other innovators to collectively display their state-of-the-art knowledge and cutting-edge innovations in the area of smart cities advanced structural sensing and monitoring systems along with complementary technological paradigms such as machine learning, big data analytics, cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT). This book will serve as a reference to educate and train the next generation researchers and engineers in the domains of smart infrastructure, civil infrastructure health monitoring, advanced computation, data mining, data fusion, and state-of-the-art nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) techniques.
