Call For Papers

Deadline extended!!

DESCRIPTION
Our workshop will focus on the vulnerability of specific social groups for a variety of reasons, including COVID-19, and the potential for technology design to lead to empowerment. We will look at what new forms of vulnerability are emerging and how we can design digital environments that acknowledge vulnerability but also have the potential to empower people in ways that are meaningful to them.

In the workshop, we will share ideas and thoughts without fear of being exposed to biased assumptions. The workshop will allow for non-hierarchical and cooperative discussion and collaboration.

We want to exchange ideas and experiences on the new vulnerabilities shared across different social groups crisis situations like COVID-19. These include not only physical limitations due to health problems, but also social and technical ones. Examples include students who cannot participate in an online course due to a very slow or non-existent internet connection, or people in rural areas or camps who use public WI-FI hotspots and cannot access the internet during a lockdown. In the workshop, we explore how the new forms of communication, socialization, interaction, and participation can help us create a more equal future in HCI.

CONTRIBUTING
For participation we expect position papers in which interested participants discuss or describe empirical results, experiences and new findings, as well as theoretical considerations related to new forms of vulnerability. We encourage researchers to share their experiences and reflect on their methods or project processes in which unplanned constraints emerged among different social groups due to crisis situations such as COVID-19.

The maximum length of a position paper is 2,000 words (4 pages).
The papers should follow the CHI formatting guidelines.
Submissions and inquiries should be sent to the
following email address: newvulnerabilities2021@gmail.com.

Concerning publication plans, we will arrange a publication of the position papers in an issue of the International Reports of Social-Informatics (IIRSI) series from the International Institute of Socio-Informatics (IISI) in Bonn, Germany. After the workshop, we plan to initiate a joint text based on the results of the workshop together with the participants who wish to participate. In addition, we plan to create a Zine that will be published on our website.
