Call For Papers

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

25th EURAS Annual Standardisation Conference
- Standardisation and Innovation -

6 - 8 September 2021, Aachen, Germany

Organised by
The European Academy for Standardisation (EURAS)
Comsys, RWTH Aachen University, DE

Hosted by
Comsys, RWTH Aachen University, DE

Standards are often perceived as obstacles to innovation. Yet, many scientific studies suggest the opposite: The use of standards and participation in standards development may be crucial for turning an innovation into a market success. At the same time, innovations may lead to new standards. Positive links between standards and innovation have been shown for numerous industry sectors, national economies and society at large. However, if this relationship is not managed well, the opposite effect may well be observed.

These links between standards, standardisation, and innovation have repeatedly been shown, but there are relatively few studies which provide evidence and theoretical explanations about the causal mechanisms behind these links. There is also a lack of knowledge about the factors that may influence this relationship.

Standardisation and innovation have ramifications for a range of stakeholders, including policy makers, firms, individuals and, indeed, society. Thus, if, how and why individual groups of stakeholders try to manage or even influence these processes is, or should be, a matter of broad interest (not least against the background of the emerging 'smart' applications).

At this conference, we welcome scientific contributions from both academia and industry related to these issues as well as contributions by practitioners about how they manage standardisation and innovation jointly. However, papers on other standardisation topics will also be considered. Sample topics include, but are not limited to:

* Standardisation as innovation?!
* Standards as innovation policy tools.
* Standardisation and Europe's research and innovation agenda.
* Standards as platforms for innovation.
* Standardisation and innovation management.
* Standardisation roadmaps.
* Standardisation of converging technologies.
* Responsible Standardisation
* Standards and digitalisation.
* Standardisation and open source.
* Standards and technical barriers to trade.
* Adoption/implementation of standards.
* Standards for sustainability.
* Standardisation and entrepreneurship.
* The impact of standards and standardisation.
* Standardisation strategy and strategic alliances.
* Standardisation via industry consortia.
* Role of industry associations in standardisation.
* History of standardisation.
* Standardisation processes.
* Standards and knowledge transfer.
* Standards and IPR.
* Relation between standardisation and legislation.
* Legal aspects of standardisation.
* Competition and compatibility among standards.
* Quality of standards.

Submissions

We welcome two types of submissions:

* Full research papers (up to 20 single-spaced pages);
* Practitioners' papers (primarily, though not exclusively on joint standardisation and innovation management; up to 4 single-spaced pages).

Both should adhere to the formatting guidelines and be submitted as .pdf files via EasyChair at: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=euras2021 (to be able to do so an account is required).

Research papers will be peer-reviewed (double blind) by at least two members of the Technical Programme Committee. Practitioners' papers will go through a more informal suitability check. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, as part of the 'EURAS Contributions to Standardisation Research' book series. No transfer of copyright will be required. Particularly good and relevant papers will be fast-tracked to a Special Issue of the International Journal on Standardization Research for a Special Issue on 'Standardisation and Innovation' (subject to authors' consent).
