Cultures in dialogue: relations between the French-speaking and English-speaking worlds in the area of languages and cultures

13-14 May 2011 at the Institut Français, London

The colloquium is sponsored by the Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches pour le Français Langue Internationale (GERFLINT), in association with the French cultural service. It is organised by the review Synergies Royaume-Uni et Irlande, edited by Prof. Michael Kelly (University of Southampton).

Proposals are invited for papers examining relations between the French-speaking and English-speaking worlds in the area of languages and cultures, including ways in which teaching in these areas can address the issues of cultural dialogue.

The colloquium seeks to respond to the growing importance of relations between cultures in the 21st century. On the one hand, the progress of physical and virtual communications has multiplied the points of contact across cultures for individuals as well as for governments, businesses and organisations. On the other hand, the processes of globalisation have reduced the differences between countries in economic, social, technical and scientific terms. Increasingly, it is left to the cultural domain to construct collective representations and to assert particular identities. Languages are at the heart of the cultural domain, and serve as indispensable vectors for communication as well as fundamental means for the expression of identities.

The tensions and complexities in relations between languages and cultures are highlighted by the relations between the French-speaking and English-speaking worlds. The two languages both serve to support international communication and to give a voice to many different cultures. Their relations have included misunderstandings and conflicts, but have also given rise to dialogue and cooperation.

The colloquium will consider all countries and all organisations in which the two cultures have met over the last half-century, without excluding longer term perspectives. It will also focus on the way in which teaching can address the issues of cultural dialogue.

We suggest some themes which might be addressed, but others are not excluded:

linguistic context (contrastive studies, language contact, plurilingual communication, multilingualism)

cultural context, broadly understood (institutions, globalisation, cultural issues)

economic context (impact of language and culture on business and vice versa)

teaching context (plurilingual pedagogy, codeswitching, intercultural approaches)

literary context (translations, representations, the Other)

scholarly context (differences and convergences between research in English and French, methodologies, comparative and interdisciplinary approaches, dissemination and recognition)

Proposals are invited for papers, which should not exceed 20 minutes in length. A brief abstract (200 words) should be sent to dialoguecultures@soton.ac.uk by 15 November 2010. Selected papers will be published in a special number of Synergies Royaume-Uni et Irlande, subject to peer review of the written text. The main working language will be French, but contributions in English will also be welcome.

Le colloque est placé sous l’égide du Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches pour le Français Langue Internationale (GERFLINT), en collaboration avec le Service culturel de l’ambassade de France à Londres. Il est organisé par la revue Synergies Royaume-Uni et Irlande, dirigée par le prof. Michael Kelly (University of Southampton).

Nous attendons des propositions de communication qui examinent les rapports entre le monde francophone et le monde anglophone dans le domaine des langues et des cultures, y compris la façon dont l’enseignement peut relever le défi du dialogue interculturel.

Le colloque cherche à apporter des réponses aux problématiques liées aux rapports entre les cultures dans le monde au XXIe siècle. D’une part, le progrès des communications physiques et virtuelles multiplie les points de contact entre les cultures, tant par la rencontre des individus que par l’action des gouvernements, des entreprises et des associations. D’autre part, les processus de mondialisation réduisent les différences entre les pays aux niveaux économique, social, technique et scientifique. De plus en plus il incombe au domaine culturel de construire les représentations collectives et d’affirmer les identités particulières. Au cœur du domaine culturel se trouvent les langues, vecteurs indispensables de communication aussi bien que voies fondamentales pour l’expression des identités.

Les tensions et les complexités dans le rapport entre les langues et les cultures sont mises en évidence au travers des rapports entre le monde francophone et le monde anglophone. Ces deux langues servent à la fois à soutenir la communication internationale et à donner une voix à la multiplicité de cultures. Leurs rapports n’ont pas été sans malentendu et conflit, mais ont aussi donné lieu au dialogue et à la collaboration.

Notre réflexion portera sur les pays et sur les organisations où les deux cultures se rencontrent depuis un demi-siècle, sans exclure les perspectives à plus long terme. Nous portons un regard particulier sur la façon dont l’enseignement des langues peut relever le défi du dialogue des cultures.

Nous proposons quelques axes de réflexion organisés en fonction des différents contextes qui permettent d’appréhender les rapports entre les langues et les cultures et qui n’excluent pas d’autres perspectives:

Le contexte linguistique (études contrastives, contacts des langues, communication plurilingue, multilinguisme)

Le contexte culturel au sens large (institutions, mondialisation, enjeux)

Le contexte économique (effet des langues et des cultures sur les entreprises, et l’inverse)

Le contexte didactique (plurilinguisme et pédagogie, alternance codique, approches interculturelles)

Le contexte littéraire (traductions, représentations, le regard de l’Autre)

Le contexte cognitif (différences et convergences de la recherche scientifique en anglais ou en français, méthodologie, approches comparatives et transversales, diffusion et reconnaissance)

Les interventions orales ne devront pas dépasser 20 minutes. Les propositions de contribution, sous forme d’un bref résumé (1000 caractères), sont à envoyer par courrier électronique à l’adresse dialoguecultures@soton.ac.uk avant le 15 novembre 2010. Une sélection des contributions sera publiée dans un numéro spécial de Synergies Royaume-Uni et Irlande, après leur évaluation par le comité de lecture. La langue principale de travail sera le français, mais les contributions en anglais seront les bienvenues.
