Workshop on Tangible Interaction with Light in the IoT at UbiComp 2016

In the ubiquitous computing era, all objects integrate computational capabilities and are interconnected generating the so-called Internet of Things (IoT). In a scenario where the user is surrounded by smart objects, it is possible to imagine new forms of interaction that can go beyond the current dominant “tap & swipe” paradigm. It is possible to finally use all the human senses to interact with the IoT objects. The aim of this workshop is using the connected lighting systems as a means to catalyze the discussion around the tangible interaction possibilities brought by the emerging IoT. Indeed, lighting systems are one of the most prominent IoT object types in a home; they are visible and recognizable, and for this reason they will be used as specific scenario for this general debate on the future of the bodily interaction in the IoT. After the theoretical session, the participants will be involved in a creative session for the generation of new concepts that will eventually be developed in the hands-on part. The prototypes developed during this short hackathon will be presented to the other participants during the final part of the workshop.

Researchers from academia and industry are invited to submit 4-8 page position papers in CHI extended Abstract format that will be peer-reviewed by the program committee. We solicit stimulating, original, better if previously unpublished, ideas. We further encourage papers that propose new research directions or could generate lively debate at the workshop.

The workshop topics include and are not limited to interaction paradigms with light, such as:
• Peripheral interaction
• Affective interaction
• Spatial interaction
• Direct manipulation

And applications of tangible interaction with light, such as:
• Lighting in work and domestic environments
• City lighting
• Arts
• Ambient displays
• Light therapy

Accepted papers will be included in the ACM Digital Library and supplemental proceedings of the conference. Please, note that as requirement to participating at the workshop at least one author of each accepted position paper must register for the workshop.
The workshop will be held in conjunction with the ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing [UbiComp 2016] and the International Symposium on Wearable Computers [ISWC 2016] on 12th/13th September 2016 in Heidelberg, Germany.
