Technical Outline of the Session and Topics:

In recent years, environmental issues including depletion of fossil fuels (e.g., coal and petroleum) and air pollution due to the over-consumption of fossil fuels have arisen. To mitigate the energy crisis caused by environmental issues, scholars from academia and engineering fields have started to carried out research on the harnessing of offshore wind energy. Offshore wind offers an alternative that might mitigate these issues and is already an important component in energy plans for a number of countries, notably in Europe but with strong potential for North America and Asia as well. The output power of offshore wind turbines will account for a larger proportion of the grid in the near future. To provide stable and sufficient power by harnessing offshore wind energy, studies with the stability and security considerations of the wind energy conversion systems (WECS) have become an active area with practical significance.

The objective of this special session is to encourage the dissemination of new concepts and ideas on the control of offshore WECS. Researchers from both academia and industry are invited to submit original and unpublished works to this special session. Topics of interest are summarized as follows.

Topics of the Session:

o Interaction and integration of WECS with power grids
o Virtual inertia control of wind turbines for power system stability enhancement
o Wake modeling and active wake control for large-scale wind farms
o Wind profile disturbance modeling and attenuation for wind turbines
o Resilient control methods against cyber attacks in wind farms
o Modeling, optimization, and control of grid-connected power converters
o Advanced control methods for DFIG or PMSG
o Fault detection and identification methods in WECS
o Modeling and control of floating offshore wind turbines
