Workshop on "Sustainable Supercomputing" November 17, 2024 Held in conjunction with the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC24), Nov 17-22, 2024, Atlanta, Georgia, USA ****************************************** Providing a sustainable path for large-scale scientific computing and AI is a pressing topic for our community, industry, and governments. Supercomputing has an insatiable appetite for computational cycles, while we face increasing challenges of delivering performance per Watt advances with silicon technology trends. All within the context of climate change, the drive towards net-zero, and economic pressures driven by geo-political challenges. Improving the sustainability of supercomputing provides many opportunities when the end-to-end cycle is considered. From the design of computational circuits and systems; to the power and cooling that is used to operate them, along with the suite of software tools used to administrate, maintain, and raise operational efficiency of HPC systems. All elements of the system must be considered, from compute nodes and interconnects, to IO and storage components of the system. This workshop will gather users, researchers, hardware and software developers to address opportunities and challenges of sustainability in the supercomputing context. Topics: ------- We solicit papers on all topics related to sustainable supercomputing, from data centres to hardware, and for system software to applications. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Energy efficient hardware for HPC & AI (design, performance, usability) * Embodied carbon and circular economy studies * Sustainable data centre operation and design * System software for managing and optimising power/energy and utilisation/throughput * Power monitoring, system and data centre telemetry * Whole system workload energy/power efficiency analysis and optimisation * Application-level efficiency analysis and optimisation Submission Guidelines: ---------------------- Authors are invited to submit unpublished, original work. Accepted papers will appear in the IEEE SC Workshop Proceedings published by the ACM. At least one author of an accepted paper must register for and present the paper at the workshop in person. We accept two types of papers: short "work in progress" papers (up to 5 pages), or full papers (6-10 papges). Page counts includes all figures and references. All papers must be formatted using the two-column, US letter size IEEE conference proceedings template (https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html) and must be submitted via Linklings (https://submissions.supercomputing.org/). Important Dates: ---------------- Paper Submission Deadline: 8th August 2024 Author Notification: 6th September 2024 Camera Ready Paper Deadline: 27th September 2024 Workshop Organizers: -------------------- * Mike Woodacre, Hewlett Packard, Winchester, UK * Michèle Weiland, EPCC, The University of Edinburgh, UK * Pekka Manninem, CSC, Helsinki, Finland * Fumiyoshi Shoji, RIKEN R-CCS, Japan * Jim Rogers, Oak Ridge National Lab, Tennessee, USA * Cate Berard, U.S. Department of Energy, USA |
