Call For Papers

Balance-Unbalance is an International Conference designed to use art as a catalyst to explore intersections between nature, science, technology and society as we move into an era of both unprecedented ecological threats and transdisciplinary possibilities. The previous events held in Argentina in 2010 and Montreal in 2011 provided a powerful platform for reflection, debate, and ideas leading towards Balance-Unbalance 2013, hosted in the UNESCO Noosa Biosphere Reserve on the Sunshine Coast of Australia. The 2013 conference theme, Future Nature, Future Culture[s] is aimed to provoke discourse around what our elusive future might hold and how transdisciplinary thought and action could be used as tools for positive change.

PAPERS
We are accepting paper submissions as both abstracts and full papers. Full papers will be peer-reviewed and successful papers published in the conference proceedings. Selected papers will also be invited to submit for a special edition of Leonardo Transactions. Submitted abstracts will also be reviewed for publication and presentation at the conference. Papers will be allocated 20 minute presentation slots during the conference with 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

POSTERS
Successful posters will displayed throughout the conference venue with a peer-reviewed abstract published in the conference proceedings.
TRANSDISCIPLINARY ACTIVITIES/PANELS
This is an open format area of the conference that includes transdisciplinary workshops, creative activities or even the proposal of a panel or roundtable with specific goals and participants, always focusing on key issues related to the main theme of the conference. The transdisciplinary activities will be allocated a 90 minute session and will run in parallel to the paper sessions. Transdisciplinary activities will also have the option to publish a abstract or short paper in the proceedings.
INSTALLATIONS / PERFORMANCES
Although most of the artistic elements of the conference will be delivered through our partnership with Floating Land 2013, we are also considering submissions for creative works that can be installed in and around the conference venue (including outdoor locations). It is essential these creative works are directly related to the conference theme and will be managed and installed by the artist. Artist biographies and program notes will be published in the conference proceedings. When you upload your abstract you can upload additional specification information, images etc as an attachment.

Please note that submissions via Easychair are limited to 20MB. If the files included in your submission exceed this size, please include a URL to your creative work in the attachment instead.
VIRTUAL
Virtual projects such as websites, interactive installations and transdisciplinary documentation related to the theme of the conference will be considered for inclusion in our virtual program and onsite virtual showcase. Successful artists may be required to participate in a Skype forum (or interaction using another online platform) during the virtual projects showcase.

PUBLICATION OF CONFERENCE PROGRAM & PROCEEDINGS
ABSTRACTS
The conference program and proceedings will draw on the abstracts uploaded
to Easy chair. These need to be written in paragraph form and no more
than 500 words (see template on the website).

If these need to be updated this should occur by 21 March at the latest.

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
The conference proceedings that will be available for the conference will
be published on a USB stick. If you have a full paper, workshop or
installation documentation that you wish to have on this please upload or
update material on Easychair by 31 March at the latest.

An edited e-book of refereed papers will be published after the
conference, these must be properly formatted (see template on the website),
and up to 5-6000 words.
Some papers have already been uploaded to Easychair, some still need updating: we need these to be uploaded in 'Word' format to allow for final editing. If you wish to have your paper included or considered for this please ensure you email the conference organisers to make this very clear.
Formatting information for papers is available on this page.

LEONARDO TRANSACTIONS
There will be a special edition of Leonardo Transactions published after
the conference (2 pages or 1500 words) - publications will be via invitation or through separate
submission.
