“The Limits to Global Governance”

31 March – 3 April 2014

Thessaloniki, Greece

The concept of sovereign nation-states, relatively independent from each other seems long gone today. Globalisation brought many challenges to governance: the emergence of regional blocs and organisations who have nowadays prerogatives and responsibilities that previously were enjoyed exclusively by states; the rise of transnational problems calling for global answers, such as environmental issues but also international crime and financial movements; finally, technology and social networks, which have since been contributing to a great extent to further bringing down the walls between countries. Due to their very nature, these issues require global answers.

On these panels we aim to explore those very links: What is Global Governance and what does it consist of? Which challenges does the concept face? What are the contrasting ideas on the subject? In what possible means can Global Governance effectively tackle global problems? Must all these subjects go hand-in-hand? These are the questions we will try to address during our promising and inspiring debates and discussions at the 1st World Congress of the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) in Thessaloniki, Greece from March 31st to April 3rd 2014.

We welcome papers from students and young scholars from Political Science and related sub-fields such as International Relations, International Political Economy, Comparative Politics, Public Policy and Public Administration, as well as Political Psychology and Behaviour, European Studies, Area Studies and other related academic disciplines. We aim to receive perspectives from both Western and non-Western points of view and perspectives.

The questions we will be addressing are, among others:

- What is Global Governance and what changes does it bring to Global Affairs?
- Global Governance and Global Issues: Which means and which ends?
- Rising Security Issues in Interdependent Societies
- International organizations, regional blocs, cooperation and global governance: what regional players are most influent in global decision-making institutions?
- Subsidiary approaches to Global Governance
- Globalization, Technology and Governance
- Challenges to Democracy by new forms of Governance
- What correlations can one draw between Democratic Accountability and Global Governance?
