CALL FOR PAPERS

Symposium on European Union, Central Asia, Turkey, Middle East, and Africa (10 December 2011, London)

Organized by Bosphorus Research Center (BRC)


Bosporus Research Center is inviting PhD students, academics and any other interested parties to join the symposium on European Union, Turkey, Central Asia, Middle East and Africa. This symposium is organized around two broad themes concerning culture and society, and economics and politics. We welcome papers from postgraduates, post-doctorate researchers, independent researchers, diplomats and journalists. Speakers are invited to speak for 15 to 20 minutes on one of the themes listed below.

Please email your up to 300 word abstract to the convenors via boreceuk@gmail.com by 15 October 2011. If your paper is selected you will be informed via e-mail by 18 October 2011. If you are chosen to present a paper, BRC expects 2000-4000 word full paper to be submitted prior to symposium (by 5 December 2011). There is a strong chance that the papers submitted are going to be published in the form of an internet issue or a book. Please note that BRC holds the right to publish the papers.


Culture & Society themes:

1. Historical and Religious studies
2. Environmental problems, effects of global warming
2. Ethnicity, identity, nationhood, human rights, women's issues
3. Media, literature, art, sport and folk culture

Economic and Political themes:

1. European Union: enlargement, Islam and Europe, immigration, future of Euro,
2. Natural resources, energy issues and water problems
3. International interests in the chosen region's natural resources
4. International Politics and Middle East: Arab Spring, Turkey, Iran, Egypt and Israel
5. Turkey’s African and Middle Eastern approach

Abstract Submission Deadline: 15 October 2011
Please include: (1) Name of presenter (2) Academic position and institutional affiliation (3) Title of the paper (4) Abstract of no more than 300 words (5) Audio-visual equipment needs. We will provide accommodation for some speakers who will contribute to the symposium from outside the UK. Launch and refreshments will be provided. A fee of £5 Pounds Sterling will be charged for registration and to cover operational costs.
