Special Issue on Application Models for Interactive Public Displays (TSWJ)
Call for Papers

Research on public digital displays has recently started shifting its focus from single purpose public displays that are developed with a single task or application in mind to general-purpose displays that can run several applications, developed by different vendors. Display applications stores, privacy, user generated content, application and content scheduling, interaction mechanisms, and interaction abstractions have been the focus of recent research.

This recent shift is analogous to what happened in the smartphone market when phones became open to applications from third parties and can have a similar impact on the public display market. However, for this to happen, we need a better understanding of what a public display application is: what types of applications can be developed, how and what resources are guaranteed by the display system and which are not, how the display system manages the various applications that may be running and the resources assigned to each application, how users interact with an application, etc.

In this special issue, we want to address these issues. Answers to these questions may result in a variety of application models and software implementations that can be explored by the industry to create open display systems that in turn may trigger the development of new applications and experiences by independent application developers.

High quality, original research articles are expected in different areas of this topic. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

Understanding the design space of applications: identifying different types of applications for public displays and innovative scenarios on how people could access and manage information
Understanding the technical requirements and solutions for multiapplication displays: what platforms are appropriate and how the platform resources should be managed
New business models and stakeholders’ implications of multiapplication displays: understanding the value proposition for all the parties: display owners, application developers, and users
Application design spaces and models
Application runtime lifecycles and execution environment
Application development frameworks and tools
Application and resource management
Scheduling models and software
Interaction abstractions and interactivity support
Usage cases of multiapplication displays

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/tswj/guidelines/.
