Transforming Ethnography: User Experience Methods and Practices

Edited by:
Dr. Sasanka Prabhala, UX Manager, PC Client Services, Intel Corporation, USA
Dr. Subhashini Ganapathy, Assistant Professor, Wright State University, USA

Introduction:
Differently from the social science tradition, ethnography today means different things to different people. Depending on their disciplinary backgrounds, ethnography is increasingly used by many practitioners in varied context and for varied purposes. Design ethnography and Human Factors ethnography provide good examples in this context. Although, each discipline focuses on understanding the user needs, desires, and requirements, they are done very differently with both pros and cons. The book aims to cover the notion and practice of ethnography, how it has evolved in the years and the differences for practitioners with different disciplinary backgrounds so as to offer a unique perspective to the research community.

The Foundations section of the book consists of fundamental concepts in the area of ethnography such as history, features, interdisciplinary nature, perspectives, and trends. The Applications section includes different definition of ethnographic practices in human-machine systems ranging from military command and control to consumer electronics to educational domains. The Advanced Concepts section extends the fundamental concepts to address social interactions, design and innovation, and advanced data analytics. Other relevant topics (not included here) would also be considered.
