CALL FOR PAPERS

The systems engineering discipline has combined expertise from a number of
different fields to create and manage large, complex, and long-living systems,
including also software-intensive Systems-of-Systems (SoS).
Hence, software architectures continue to increase in size and complexity
and many of them have to deal with complicated issues, such as adaptive
capabilities and interactions among diverse systems or subsystems.
The tension among different stakeholders during the creation of these
systems can be also a significant complicating factor in the architecting process.
One trend observed in recent years is the increasing effort and time required to maintain
systems and their architectures for the long term. Such effort and cost can be difficult to estimate,
and software companies are now trying to measure how sustainable their systems and architectures
are to achieve technical sustainability. In well-established domains,
such as the banking or automotive sectors, reference architectures
(e.g., AUTOSAR for the automotive domain) has been also explored to support
long-living systems together with other approaches and technologies.

Objectives and topics
The aim of this special issue is to document the techniques, tools,
and approaches for architecture sustainability and their impact on
software maintenance and evolution. We are looking for high quality
submissions on the challenges and trends in technical sustainability.
The topics of interest include, but not limited to:

• Empirical studies of the impact of sustainability practices
• Metrics to estimate software and systems sustainability
• Studies relating architectural sustainability and technical debt
• Relationship between longevity, sustainability, and architecture evolution
• Sustainability and longevity of enterprise reference architectures
• Sustainability in specific application domains
• Variability in reference architectures addressing flexibility and configurability
• Estimating change impact in sustainable software architectures or reference architectures
• Sustainability of architectural knowledge, techniques, and metrics
• Cost models to estimate the effort for having sustainable architectures
• Methods and tools to estimate and achieve technical sustainability
• Processes to create sustainable software architectures and reference architectures
• Estimating the sustainability and complexity of SoS architectures
• Sustainability and evolution of SoS
• Viewpoints and perspectives addressing competing stakeholder’s concerns in reference architectures and/or systems architectures
• Dynamic aspects supporting the evolution and configurability in software architectures

Decisions
Submissions will be reviewed by at least three experts in the field.
The primary evaluation criteria are: high-quality of the submission,
innovative aspects in the domain of software sustainability, practical approaches,
and thorough evaluation. The guest editors in consultation with the
Editor-in-Chief and the Special Issues Editor will make the final decisions.
