Special Issue on Skin Cancer Image Analysis

INTRODUCTION

Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics is seeking original and unpublished
manuscripts for a special issue on Skin Cancer Image Analysis, scheduled for
publication in 2010.

Invasive and in situ malignant melanoma together comprise one of the most
rapidly increasing cancers in the world. Invasive melanoma alone has an
estimated incidence of 62,480 and an estimated total of 8420 deaths in the
United States in 2008. Early diagnosis is particularly important since melanoma
can be cured with a simple excision if detected early. In the past, the primary
form of diagnosis for melanoma has been unaided clinical examination. In recent
years, dermoscopy has provided increased ability to observe pigmented lesion
structures. However, dermoscopy remains difficult to learn and subjective, and
several studies have confirmed the limits of unaided dermoscopy. Newer
technologies, including digital dermoscopy, infrared imaging, multispectral
imaging, and confocal microscopy, have recently come to the forefront in
providing greater diagnostic accuracy. These imaging technologies can serve as
an adjunct to physicians and in some implementations could provide fully
automated skin cancer screening potential. Although computerized techniques
cannot as yet provide a definitive diagnosis; they can be used to improve biopsy
decision-making as well as early melanoma detection in the clinic, especially
for patients with multiple atypical nevi, congenital nevi, and other clinical
presentations.

This special issue aims to cover all aspects of skin cancer image analysis.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

* Image enhancement
* Image registration
* Border detection
* Feature extraction
* Feature selection
* Classification
* Image analysis aspects of new and emerging imaging modalities

PAPER SUBMISSION

Authors are encouraged to submit papers in either of two categories - Original
Research or Technical Notes. Submitted manuscripts must be unpublished and may
not be under consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts should be in double-spaced,
single-column format, with a font size of 11 points or larger and a margin of
at least 1 inch on all sides. For Original Research, the manuscript may not
exceed 20 pages including title, names of authors and their complete contact
information, abstract, text, images, figures, tables, and references. Technical
Notes should not exceed 8 pages, inclusive of all above material. Manuscripts
should conform to the standard guidelines of CMIG. Prospective authors should
submit an electronic copy of their manuscript through the CMIG online submission
system at http://ees.elsevier.com/cmig. Papers should be marked as "Special
Issue: Skin Cancer Imaging" in the Article Type section and "Skin Cancer Image
Analysis" special issue should be mentioned in the cover letter. Each paper will
be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Editorial decisions will be
made within 60 days after manuscript receipt.

All submissions should be made by July 31st 2009 at the latest. We anticipate
publishing the special issue early in 2010.
