Call For Papers

Modern research in intelligent interactive systems can offer valuable assistance to elderly and disabled population by helping them to engage more fully with the world. However, many users find it difficult to use existing interaction devices either for physical or aging-related impairments, though researches on intelligent voice recognition, adaptable pointing, browsing and navigation, affect and gesture recognition can hugely benefit them.

This workshop will take a broader approach than existing ones for improving the quality of interaction experience for a wide range of users. It will explore the applicability of different modalities of interaction (like speech, gesture, haptic interface, and so on) and investigate ways to develop intelligent adaptation systems that meet accessibility criteria and can personalize interfaces according to the range of abilities of the user. A particular focus will be given on interoperability though the adherence to standards for Accessibility such as WAI-ARIA and ISO standards.

The workshop will have a session on demonstrating state of the art multimodal interaction techniques like free hand and gyroscopic remote based gesture recognition system, single switch scanning, speech based system and simulation of users interaction patterns considering users with special range of abilities.

We are trying to publish a special issue of a journal based on the full papers presented in the workshop. The detail of the journal will be uploaded in late November.

Objectives

· Providing an interdisciplinary platform for discussing research on intelligent user interfaces and multimodal interaction,

· Investigate how intelligent user interfaces can support inclusive design

· Finding ways to use multimodality to improve quality of life, especially focusing on elderly and disabled people.

· Broadening the applications of both multimodal interaction and assistive technology

· Involving different stakeholders, especially the industry as the bridge to the end users, in developing accessible intelligent systems and fostering standards in development and design.

· Investigating ways to develop new standards for accessibility and interoperable user modelling.

· Initiating an effort to bridge the gap between assistive technology researchers and main stream HCI and AI researchers.

· Present and demonstrate latest results and prototypes from intelligent user interface research.
