For many, the election of Mauricio Macri as President of Argentina in 2015 symbolized what they hope was the beginning of the end of years of economic and political uncertainty in the country. But where is Argentina now? This interdisciplinary faculty seminar hosted by IES Abroad will examine the current state of Argentina—and to a great extent, the entire Southern Cone—from social, political, and economic perspectives.
The seminar invites specialists from the social sciences and humanities with research interests in contemporary Argentina and South America. The seminar will bring together specialists from the United States and South America. Topics of particular interest include: • Politics and Policy • Economic Development in the Southern Cone • National Identity • Social Activism in the Arts & Literature • 21st Century Populism • Urban Studies in Latin America Other presentations on aspects of contemporary Argentine and South American studies will also be considered. The format of the seminar is designed to allow for extensive discussion and exchanges of ideas amongst a limited group (generally 10 – 15) of participants. As such, presentations will be scheduled in hour-long blocks, allowing 30 - 40 minutes for each speaker’s presentation and ample time for discussion. Presentations may be given in English or Spanish. Cost: • Member Institutions: $650 • Associate Member Institutions: $750 IES Abroad will cover the cost of international airfare (restrictions apply), accommodations, ground transportation within Buenos Aires, most meals, and entrance fees for group activities. Participants are responsible for the cost of some meals, personal expenses, and incidentals. IES Abroad will work with schools whose policies require them to pay the full cost of site visits. For further information about the nomination or selection process, contact IES Abroad at AcademicPrograms@IESAbroad.org. Participation Requirements: Seminar nominees must be full-time professors at IES Abroad Member or Associate Member institutions. Nominees must be able to demonstrate that they are actively engaged in teaching and/or research on topics related to the seminar themes. Participants are invited to submit proposals to present current research or course lectures on these topics. Nomination Deadline: February 1, 2017. |
