ACM TVX (Interactive Experiences for Television and Online Video) is the
leading international conference for research into online video, TV interaction and user experience. It is a multi-disciplinary conference and we welcome submissions in a broad range of topics. Tom Bartindale (Newcastle University, UK) Wei-Tsang Ooi (National University of Singapore, SINGAPORE) Vinoba Vinayagamoorthy (BBC Research + Development, UK) The TVX 2018 Technical Programme Committee ------------------- WHAT TO SUBMIT Every submission to TVX is considered under its own merits. We aim to foster discussions and innovative experiences amongst the academic research community and industry on broad range of topics within the TV and online media ecosystems. As such we encourage authors to submit work related to (but not limited to) immersive experiences, content production, deployment, design of novel interaction techniques/devices, user research, and for this year in particular, we have introduced two hot topics: AI/Big Data and Social Computing. To give you a flavour of what these topics and research areas mean and how they are relevant to the community, we have compiled a non-exhaustive list for inspiration. * AI/big data: Use of big data, AI, deep learning and machine learning approaches to increase value of content and experience. This can include advanced computational systems based on content and/or user generated data to support content production, recommendation systems, interactive/synchronous environments, collective intelligence and crowdsourcing, or location-based and context-aware applications and services. * Social computing: Media consumption and production space with social technologies, IoT, social media and connected viewing. * Immersive experiences: Explorations of augmented, mixed and virtual reality, UHD TV, second third and fourth screens for content production, delivery and consumption. Novel forms of content production and content consumption using purpose-built head mounted devices as a stand alone experience or in combination with traditional viewing devices. Enabling technologies and studies into how users respond to immersive experiences and how engaging/limiting they might find these forms of content consumption. Methodologies to evaluate added value and encouraging repeat consumption. * User experience & interaction design: how and why people consume and interact with online video and television (and with each other) and how such systems should be designed to provide easy, efficient, engaging and novel user experiences, including social aspects. This includes novel user interface designs, interaction system designs, architecture, user-centered design methods and approaches, and quality of experience measurement and monitoring. * Content production: Content production paradigms including cross-platform services, interactive and transmedia storytelling, personalization, and immersive media production. * Systems & infrastructures: The architecture, design, deployment, and evaluation of systems and infrastructures that support TV and online video, including the delivery, transmission, and synchronization of media in scenarios such as entertainment, gaming, education, and healthcare. * Devices & interaction techniques: The design, architecture, usage and evaluation of devices and interaction techniques that enable a connected ecosystem of devices and create valuable new capabilities for online video and television. * Media studies: consumption practices, changing behavior as well as adoption and domestication of new TV-related services, and quality of experience. This topic also includes research on ethical, regulatory, and policy issues as well as novel mechanisms for evaluating and measuring the impact of TV and online video. * Business models & marketing: novel business models and marketing strategies for the new media landscape of TV and online video (for example OTT services). This topic includes studies around novel ways of advertising models and strategies (for example targeted advertising, programmatic buying). * Innovative concepts and media art: innovative design strategies, new concepts, and prototype experiences for TV and online video, including case studies and media artworks and performances SHORT OR LONG PAPER? In TVX, we define clear guidance for the submission of short and long papers. Both short and long papers must deliver a complete contribution, that is, work that is defined clearly and executed completely. For both, appropriate background research and research hypothesis must be provided, however the short paper format is more suited to smaller contributions that do not require the space of a longer paper to describe and less related work to define the space. The committee will take into account the selected length of papers when making judgement on validity of contribution. SUBMISSION FORMAT All submissions should follow the ACM guidelines (see ACM format template). We invite the submission of anonymized 8-10 page Long Papers or 4-6 page Short Papers in SIGCHI Format with 150 word abstract. Authors also must specify the key area of the submission (out of the ten areas indicated in the “Topics” section below) and keywords. Page limit does not include “References.” THINGS TO CONSIDER Double-blind Review: Please prepare your paper in a way that preserves anonymity of the authors, otherwise the paper will be immediately rejected. This includes removing authors’ names below the title, avoiding phrases such as “our previous work” when referring to earlier publications, removing acknowledgement information (e.g., co-workers and grant IDs) and providing links to websites that may identify the authors. Selection criteria: Papers are expected to significantly contribute the field of TV and online video, based on the different areas. The contribution has to be original, novel and identify how it advances the state-of-the-art (citing the most appropriate references). The paper has to be clear, well written and structured, and easy to understand. Finally, the paper must detail the methodology used for answering the research questions, justify its adequacy, and ensure the validity of the presented results. Originality: Material submitted to ACM TVX has to be original. By submitting a manuscript to the conference, the authors guarantee it has not been previously published, or accepted for publication, in substantially similar form. No paper containing significant overlap can be submitted to other conferences or journals during the review period. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure originality. Please view the basic ACM policies (http://www.acm.org/publications/policies/prepub_eval and http://www.acm.org/publications/policies/sim_submissions/) and be advised to revise beyond them; these are subjective measures left to the interpretation and judgement of the reviewers and committee members. SELECTION PROCESS Content will be rigorously reviewed by members of the program committee and peer experts. Each paper will receive feedback in the form of at least three peer review reports. Authors will receive feedback on their work after the first review round and will be able to submit a rebuttal. The final selection will be made by the Technical Program Committee based on the review reports, rebuttal and meta-review. The program committee reserves the right to ask authors for specific changes as a precondition to publication. Authors of accepted long and short paper will be invited to give an oral presentation of their work at the conference. Accepted paper submissions will be published in the conference proceedings by ACM and indexed by the ACM Digital Library. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the actual conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. MENTORING This year we cordially offer mentoring support from seasoned TVX researchers and program committee members in order to assist those who need additional support in their submissions. Recipients of mentoring would typically be those who are submitting to TVX for the first time, those in circumstances which are particular adverse (e.g. a disability or personal circumstances which impact upon the paper preparation process), or a particularly novel submission which may require additional input.
