An Element of Choice



Computers, Privacy and Data Protection – CPDP 2010 is Europe’s most important meeting for academics, practitioners, policy-makers and activists to come together, exchange ideas and discuss emerging issues of information technology, privacy, data protection and law.

CPDP is organised by
the Vrije Universiteit Brussel,
the Université de Namur,
the Tilburg University,
the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique
and
the Fraunhofer Institut für System und Innovationsforschung.


SUBJECT


The CPDP comprises panel discussions with policy stakeholders (such as the European Commission and supervisory bodies), as well as workshop presentations on specific topics from the theory and practice of information privacy and Data Protection law and technology.

This year’s conference theme ‘An Element of Choice’ is chosen because of the many options open for data protection policy. Technological change is dictated by higher forces, but can be steered. Values such as freedom and privacy can be defended or abandoned. A genuine choice is possible.

Suitable topics for workshop papers include technical and organisational measures for protecting security and privacy in cloud computing (for which there is a separate call below); the structure of data protection policy within the European Commission; privacy in ambient intelligence; reforms to the data protection legislation; privacy technologies (especially socio-political and economic analysis); transparency tools and individual privacy rights.


INVITATION


The CPDP Scientific Committee invites contributions from scholars, PhD students and experts in the areas of social sciences and computer sciences, and civil society advocacy. Suggested topics include, but are not restricted to:

• Review of the Data Protection Directive (directive 95/46/EC);
• Right of Subject’s Access;
• Data Retention, Collection and “Sharing” without consent;
• Right to be Forgotten and Right not be Recognized;
• Identity;
• Smart Vehicles;
• Information Security;
• Surveillance and Strategies of CounterSurveillance;
• Privacy Advocacy;
• Data Protection and the Third Pillar;
• Ambient Intelligence;
• Market and regulatory failure in EU policies.


CALL FOR PAPERS


The Scientific Committee is seeking submission of position and (full) academic papers for oral presentations
(Position papers in academia enable discussion on emerging topics without the experimentation and original research normally present in an academic paper. Commonly, such a document will substantiate the opinions or positions put forward with evidence from an extensive objective discussion of the topic (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Position_paper). The maximum page limit for Position Papers is 10 pages, while for Full Papers is 15 pages.)

Presentations will be either integrated in the most relevant panel-session and workshop,
or in a specific PhD evening session (29th January 2009).

Position and academic papers will be peer reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee and other independent reviewers (where necessary). In order to guarantee the process of double-blind review, identifying information should be removed. Please send in a separate Word attachment the following information: Title, Affiliation and Author’s name.


CONFERENCE BOOK


All presented papers will be published in the conference book. (See the follow-up book of the first CPDP conference: http://www.springer.com/law/book/978-1-4020-9497-2)

For position papers, authors must send the entire paper and identifying information by 16 November 2009.
Notification will be provided by the 15 December 2009.

For full papers, authors must provide a 200 words abstract by 16 November 2009. Notification of acceptance will be provided by 30 November 2009, and accepted full papers are due by 21 December 2009.
