The local organizing committee for ICSDM 2011 & BJ-IWGIS 2011 welcomes your participation in the 1st International Conference on Spatial Data Mining and Geographical Knowledge Services in conjunction with the 8th International Workshop on Geographical Information Systems.
The Beijing International Workshop on Geographical Information System (BJ-IWGIS) was initiated by the State Key Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Information System in Beijing in 1987 with the purpose of demonstrating and discussing the methodologies and applications of geographical information systems. Since then, it has been held in Beijing every three years and the 7th workshop was hosted by the Institute of Geographical Science & Natural Resource Research, the Chinese Academy of Science in 2007. The workshop series have provided invaluable opportunities to scientists, GIS developers and users to share their new findings, ideas, and knowledge through presentations and discussions, and has become a considerably well known international forum in the field of geo-information science and technology in China. BJ-IWGIS 2011 will be the eighth forum of this successful series and firsty take place outside Beijing. Its main goal is to become a prestigious and high quality international conference that brings together researchers, scientists, engineers , and practitioners to share experiences and research results, and to exchange ideas about all aspects of geo-information science and technology. With a huge volume of spatial data coming from an increasing number of geographical sensors and satellites being made widely available on the web, spatial data mining (SDM) and knowledge discovery(KD), and services on demand are becoming important issues in Earth Observation Systems research ranging from data acquisition to in-depth analysis and applications. SDM is the process of discovering interesting and previously unknown, but potentially useful spatial patterns and processes from large spatial datasets. Extracting hidden patterns and processes from spatial datasets is more difficult than that from ordinary databases because of the complexity of spatial data types, uncertainty, etc. SDM or spatial knowledge discovery (SKD) from geo-spatial datasets is expected to be an effective and efficient way to address ¡°data rich but knowledge poor¡± problem in spatial analysis. Making use of Web services and Grid or Cloud service to enable users to access distributed databases, to perform data mining, and to render unraveled spatial knowledge, mining algorithms and analysis tools are thus instrumental for enabling effective and efficient decision making. To capture the best of both worlds, the IEEE International Conference on Spatial Data Mining and Geographical Knowledge Services (ICSDM) is thus initiated and organized in conjunction with BJ-IWGIS. Its main goal is to make it a permanent forum or platform for researchers and practitioners to share their innovative ideas and results in the multi-faceted research of SDM / SKD, geographical knowledge sharing, and service and decision support. The two conferences BJ-IWGIS 2011 and ICSDM 2011 will be held in conjunction in Fuzhou, Fujian, P. R. China June 29-July 1, 2011. This will give an excellent opportunity to all researchers and professionals involved in Spatial analysis, GIS, GPS, and Remote sensing research to discuss advances, news theories, technologies, and novel applications. Authors are invited to submit unpublished papers, which are not under review in any other conferences or journals at the time of submission, on the topics (but not limit to) described under the Theme & Topics section. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference and published in the EI-indexed IEEE eXplore. Selected papers will be published in special issues of SCI journals.
