Call For Papers

SHORT VERSION:
It is our great pleasure to announce a topical issue on the Management, Search and Analysis of Solar Astronomy Big Data that will be printed as the separate volume of Astronomy and Computing journal.

To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion into the special issue, it is important that authors select “Special Issue :Solar Astronomy Big Data” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process.
3. Important dates:
Submissions for this topical issue will be accepted until February 1st, 2015.
We hope to be able to send out acceptance/rejection decision by April 30th, 2015.
And collect Ready-to-print papers by May 15th, 2015.

With the launch of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission on in 2010, researchers in solar physics have indisputably entered the era of Big Data. This has led to new challenges that are likely to expand further with the launch of the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), currently under construction in Hawaii. This telescope is expected to generate an unprecedented 3-5 petabytes of data per year.

Astronomy and Computing has therefore opened up a Topical Issue on the Management, Search and Analysis of Solar Astronomy Big Data.

The issue is open for papers on the following topics:
A) Foundations for Solar Astronomy Big Data Management
- New Computational Models for Storage, Distribution and Processing of Solar Astronomy Data
- Evaluation of Information Quality for the Solar Astronomy Data from Telescopes, as well as Derived Data Products (Meta-Data)
- New Scientific Standards for Solar Information Processing and Information Quality Evaluation
- System Architectures, Design and Deployment of Solar Data Archives, Portals and Services
- Data Management and Stream Computing for Solar Astronomy Data in Cloud and Distributed Environments
- Integration of Heterogeneous Solar Information from Multiple Data Repositories
- Solar Data Retrieval, Visualization, Recognition and Data-Driven Analyses
- New Computational Models for Search, Retrieval, and Analysis of Solar Astronomy Data
B) Scalable Algorithms and Systems for Solar Activity Recognition from Solar Big Data Repositories
- Solar Astronomy Data Search Architectures, their Scalability, Efficiency, and Real-life Usefulness, Visualization Tools for Large-scale Solar Astronomy Data
- Computational Modeling and Solar Data Integration
- Cloud, Distributed, and Stream Data Mining for Big Velocity Solar Astronomy Data
- Semantic-based Solar Data Mining for Big Variety Solar Information
- Multimedia, Multi-structured, and Spatiotemporal Solar Data Mining for Big Value solar data analyses (e.g. Space Weather)
- New Programming Models for Solar Data, including and beyond Hadoop and MapReduce
C) Computer Applications related to Solar Astronomy Big Data (Big Value in Solar Data)
- Complex Solar Weather Applications in Science, Engineering, Education, Navigation, Power Grids, and telecommunication for Government, Public and Private Industry Sectors
- Real-life Case Studies of Big Value Creation through Solar Data Analytics (e.g. Space Weather)
- Experiences with Big Data Project Deployments in Solar Physics
- Solar Astronomy Data and Knowledge Distribution in the Social Web
