Introduction
The book aims at presenting a set of novel and advanced techniques used in real-world industrial applications to improve the dependability of rail-based transportation systems. The analysis will address both natural/random and intentional/deliberately-malicious threats (ranging from human errors, e.g. coding or maintenance mistakes, to terrorist attacks), which can compromise system integrity both at the hardware (control devices, infrastructures) and software (logic code, data network) levels.

Objective of the Book
The book can be a useful reference for experts, consultants and railway system engineers who need to perform risk or dependability analyses for development or assessment/certification purposes. It can also provide a collection of techniques and case-studies for students of university courses about security and dependability of life/money critical systems and infrastructures.

Target Audience
Railway system engineers, real-time software testers (in particular the ones operating in the verification and validation units), safety and security consultants, students of university courses on computer dependability, railway engineering and critical infrastructure protection.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

RAILWAY APPLICATIONS
Intelligent Rail-Based Transportation, Computer-Based Signalling and Interlocking Systems, Centralized Traffic Control, Cab Signalling, Warning Systems, Radio signalling, Axle Counters, Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), Automatic Train Control (ATC), ATS (Automatic Train Supervision), Computer-Based Train Dispatching and Route Optimization, Positive Train Control (PTC), CBTC (Communication Based Train Control), ERTMS/ETCS (European Railway Traffic Management System / European Train Control System), Railway Interoperability, High-Speed Railways, Vehicle Health Monitoring of Rolling Stock, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), Anti-Collision Devices, Track Circuit Break Detection, Train Stop Devices, Vehicle Control Logics, Driverless systems, Surveillance and Physical Security Systems, Innovative Railway Control and Monitoring Systems

RESEARCH AREAS
Computer Dependability (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety, Resilience, Performability, Trustworthiness, Survivability, Plasticity), High-Assurance Systems Engineering, Verification and Validation, Certification, Model-Based Software Testing, Formal Methods, Model-Checking and Theorem-Proving, Software Fault-Tolerance and Rejuvenation, Multi-Paradigm Modeling (Multi-Formalism, Meta-Modeling), Fault Injection and Measurement-Based Analysis, Failure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis, Information and Network Security, Protocols for Real-Time Distributed Systems, Dependable Middlewares, Self-Checking and Reconfigurable Hardware, Business Continuity Management, Back-Up and Disaster Recovery Strategies, Human Machine Interaction and Human Factors

Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before November 25, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by December 25, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 25, 2011. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Publisher
This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference), “Medical Information Science Reference,” “Business Science Reference,” and “Engineering Science Reference” imprints.
