Bucharest Conference in Applied Ethics 2014
5th Edition

“Ethical Challenges in the New Business Environment”
October 23-24, 2014 ♦ Bucharest, Romania

The current economic and social crisis is generally considered a solid proof that ethics is rather optional for businessmen and companies than a normal way of doing business. The scandals that affected the banking sector since 2000, for example, have been taken as illustrating the loose moral standards in the business environment in general and many have accused a complicity between the business and public sectors. Others blamed a so-called “savage Capitalism” for providing the setting for unethical behaviour. The 5th edition of the Bucharest Conference in Applied Ethics aims to discuss all those ethical challenges posed by the new dynamics of the economic environment: from more strict legal regulations to self-regulation, from economic (make profit!) to social (be a good corporate citizen!) and environmental (save the planet!) constraints, from corruption to human rights protection etc.

The 5th edition of the Bucharest Conference in Applied Ethics will bring together both academics and professionals from various disciplines and industries in order to explore the trends and propose new ways to think about the ethical limits of business.

We invite submissions dealing with one or more of the following topics:
● Ethics in Business vs. Corporate Social Responsibility
● Legislating Ethics for Business Sector or Self-regulation?
● Economic vs. Environmental and Social Constraints in Business Environment
● Free-Competition and Corruption in Emerging Markets
● Human Rights in the Business Sector
● Responsible Sourcing
● Outsourcing and Its Ethical Challenges
● Moral Leadership in Business Organizations
● Ethical Communication and Mass-Media Industry
● Ethics and Marketing Practices

A selection of the papers presented at the Bucharest Conference in Applied Ethics will be published in the “BCAE Proceedings”. Further details are available on our official website. Meanwhile, all abstracts will be published in the “BCAE Brief”, a series of booklets summarizing all BCAE presentations.

Keynote Speakers
The final list of keynote speakers will be published by the end of May 2014.

Submissions and Registration
Early submissions are highly encouraged. BCAE 2014 can host approximately 36 papers; given the experience of the previous 4 editions, the competition is very high. In order to select the most valuable contributions, we have set out a 3 stage process: (1) abstract submissions, evaluation and acceptance; (2) final papers submissions, evaluation and acceptance; (3) registration and participation confirmation. Here are the deadlines for each stage:

○ Abstract Submissions
■ Abstracts: June 20, 2014
■ Abstracts acceptance decision: June 30, 2014
○ Final Papers Submissions
■ Final papers: August 3, 2014
■ Final papers acceptance decision: August 17, 2014
○ Registration
■ Early Bird Registration: 125 Euro, before August 3, 2014
■ Regular Registration: 200 Euro, August 4 - September 30, 2014
■ Late Registration: 250 Euro, after October 1, 2014
■ Registration Closing Date: October 20, 2013

Abstracts and final papers must be submitted as Microsoft Word (version 98+) and PDF documents to bcae2014@bcae.ro. All papers must observe the Editorial Guidelines provided on BCAE website. Papers that have not been prepared in accordance with BCAE editorial norms will not be taken into consideration.

Abstracts should not exceeding 300 words and contain from 3 to 5 keywords best describing the content. On October 20, 2014, all abstracts will be published on the BCAE website for the general public. Meanwhile, all papers will be circulated among the registered participants for feedback and comments during the conference.

Final papers should not exceed 20 pages, 1.5 spaced, references included. Papers must be prepared for blind-review: they should contain only the abstract and no element that can lead to author's identification (name, academic affiliation, acknowledgements). Papers must be proofread before submissions.

The official language is English. All abstracts, papers and presentation must be prepared for an English-speaking audience and a 20-minutes talk.

There are a limited number of fee waivers – 40% off the Early Bird Registration (75 Euro) – for PhD students / NGO members without bursaries if they register by August 3, 2014. The fee waivers are offered on competitive basis. Those qualifying for the registration waiver must submit a full curriculum vitae (including a list of publications and talks) and a letter from their home organization stating their current status.

Three scholarships consisting in full participation fee waiving will be offered to the most promising papers submitted by 3 Central and Eastern European PhD students.

The on-line registration will be available until October 20, 2014. After this date, on-line registration will no longer be possible.
