Call For Papers

Call for papers & artwork

The usual definitions concerning the relations between mathematics and the body are traditionally predicated by ontological discourses: The mathematical estrangement of Cartesian essentialism installs a regime of truth that imposes a science and a silence to the logic of surfaces, skins and the flesh: No relation, merely subjection and submission to the given measured order. However, this mathematical and subsequently cybernetic longing for disembodiment is put into question with the augmenting, multiplying and re-coding of bodies in a culture of biodigital math and flesh. A radical departure from the subjection of flesh to math and math to flesh reveals the immeasurably strange and the incalculably erotic; opening up a number of sticky issues around emerging topologies, sensitized robots and becoming bodies. Detached from the external (dis)order of classical epistemologies, we are asking artists, scientists, cyborgs, mathematicians, philosophers and all other agents to question, challenge and “make sense” of this entangled elsewhere that we now find ourselves and our practices in.

Zētēsis, the international journal for fine art, philosophy and the wild sciences, is now accepting submissions for its upcoming volume Math + flesh. We welcome papers and artwork that responds to this volume’s theme of the interrelations of mathematics and the flesh. This includes, but is not limited to: Uncoding, recoding, and decoding of the body, augmentation, the continuum of the skin, fractals, new materialities, artificial intelligence, blood and the clinical, data-flesh, and technologies of the biodigital. We invite artists, scientists and philosophers to interrogate how mathematics, numbers, code and how the act of measuring affects and evokes new configurations and intensities on the contested site of bodies.

Submitted abstracts should not exceed 500 words, and be accompanied by a short biography of no more than 300 words. Submitted images for artworks should be high resolution (300dpi at full scale). Please include a short bio and a short description of the work for peer-review. If you wish to include a description of the work or artist statement for publishing alongside your work, this should be no longer than 500 words. If your abstract is successful, you will be asked to submit your full paper, ranging between 3000-5000 words using Chicago style referencing by 19th January 2016.

All papers, articles and artwork are subject to a blind peer-review by a member of our international peer-review and advisory board.

Please submit your papers or artwork to editors@zetesis.co.uk

Abstract/artwork deadline: 19th November 2015
