****************************************************************************

The Inaugural Workshop on Digital Forensics Experiments and Results (DiFER 2015) will be held January 7, 2015, at George Mason University. DiFER provides a forum for digital forensics researchers, practitioners, students, and faculty to present and share experimental results with relevance to the science and practice of digital forensics. Repeatable, controlled, and well-structured experiments are the foundation of all scientific advancement. DiFER provides a forum for such experiments to be presented, discussed, shared, and preserved. See below for paper requirements and submission details.

PARTIAL TOPIC LIST

DiFER welcomes the submission of papers reporting on experiments and results with relevance to the science and practice of digital forensics. Papers may address experiments on the following topics, although any experimental results with relevance to digital forensics will be equally considered. Experiments which have been fully executed and analyzed are welcome, as are preliminary experiments for which results have not yet been fully analyzed.

• Imaging and data transfer speeds for various media and communication protocols
• Media and image search times and relevant parameters
• Digital artifact persistence on various physical media
• Recovery of digital artifacts from various media, devices, and components
• Persistence and prevalence of online digital artifacts
• Persistence and prevalence of digital artifacts in cloud and virtual environments
• Persistence and prevalence of digital artifacts in mobile environments
• Network traffic monitoring, processing, and manipulation
• Manipulation of digital data prior to imaging
• Reasoning over digital artifacts to reconstruct prior events
• Recovery of content from damaged files
• Identification of file fragment type and origin
• Dating of file and data fragments
• Association of file and data fragments
• Encryption and decryption times and artifacts
• Time to compromise for exposed systems
• Data tagging and tracing
• Time and nature of exploitation of compromised credentials and personal information
• Instrumented systems

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Submissions of papers which present experimental results relevant to digital forensics are welcomed. Each submission will be evaluated for acceptability by at least three members of the Program Committee. Decisions about acceptance will be based on experimental setup, execution, and results, relevance to the digital forensics domain, originality, potential significance, and clarity. Because all accepted papers are to be presented at the conference, we require that at least one of the submitting authors must be a registered participant committed to attending DiFER 2015. Submissions are accepted only in electronic format and must closely follow the US Letter version of the IEEE format for conference proceedings. For complete details and to download LATEX and MS Word templates, choose the US Letter size from the IEEE’s Manuscript Template webpage (http://www.computer.org/portal/web/cscps/formatting). Submitted papers are expected to be between six (6) and ten (10) pages in length, including figures. References do not count towards the page limit. Submissions longer than ten pages will not be reviewed. Submissions should not have already been published in or accepted for publication in a journal or another conference. Submissions will be peer reviewed and papers will be published online in the CEUR workshop proceedings series (http://ceur-ws.org/). Authors who wish to withhold their paper from publication (either because it contains references to proprietary data, or because they wish to publish it later at a different venue) can request that only the abstract be published. For full consideration, papers must be submitted through EasyChair by the deadline listed below. Final submissions for the proceedings must be accompanied by a signed copyright release form. The submissions web page is https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=DiFER 2015.

AUDIENCE

DiFER is an opportunity for digital forensics researchers, practitioners, students, and faculty to present and learn about current and recent experiments with relevance to digital forensics. Paper presentations will include Q&A sessions with the authors, and time will be set aside for audience interaction with each other and the authors. Workshop proceedings will be published in the CEUR workshop proceedings series.
