Call For Papers

MAI Journal: A New Zealand Journal of Indigenous Scholarship is a multidisciplinary, internationally peer-reviewed journal published biannually which presents indigenous worldviews from Maori and other native indigenous perspectives. MAI Journal is edited by Professor Helen Moewaka Barnes and Dr. Maria Bargh, who are supported by an Editorial Board.

MAI Journal, published by Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, New Zealand’s Maori Centre of Research Excellence, publishes multidisciplinary peer-reviewed articles that critically analyse and substantively address indigenous and Pacific issues in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand. Manuscripts should make a significant contribution to the field and extend the boundaries of indigenous scholarship in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand. We also welcome articles in indigenous languages relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand. All papers will be reviewed by at least one indigenous reviewer.

MAI Journal has grown from MAI Review, the journal of the former Capability Building programme of Nga Pae o te Maramatanga. All MAI Review content is still freely available at www.review.mai.ac.nz. MAI Journal reflects developments in the vision and mission of Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, the landscape of indigenous research in Aotearoa New Zealand, and builds on the legacy of MAI Review.

Submission and Deadline Details
MAI Journal primarily accepts substantive articles (up to 7000 words) that address a particular indigenous topic or theme. We also publish short, timely commentaries which address a particular indigenous topic, theme, or contemporary issue affecting indigenous societies (up to 3000 words long).

We welcome submissions all year round; however, for consideration for the first issue of 2015 articles should reach us no later than the 16th of February 2015. We recommend early submission.
