The protection of personal data and users’ privacy is a major concern especially with technology advances that make the data accessible from anywhere. Research often focuses on the security of data and the prevention of data breaches. However, privacy and data protection extends beyond security mechanisms and links to several other concerns that relate not only to technological aspects but also societal and regulatory aspects that can affect greatly how we protect our data and maintain user privacy in the process. One major concern is lack of transparency on data protection measures taken by service providers and how these handle customer and consumer data. This affects consumers’ trust for new technologies (e.g. cloud eco-system). Another concern comes from the recent Snowden revelations regarding state access to data held by private enterprises without the knowledge of those whose data it concerned (PRISM, TEMPORA). In all, a pressing question is how transparent information processing actually is, especially, when it comes to processing of personal data in complex environments, like cloud ecosystems. Companies need more than ever to prove to businesses and consumers how they handle their confidential and personal data. Transparency and accountability are gaining attention as a result.
This workshop aims at bringing researchers from different disciplines to discuss recent advances in privacy-enhancing technologies, transparency, and accountability mechanisms. Security experts are needed to develop technical tools that will implement data protection in practice, by promoting accountability and transparency to the benefit of individuals and companies. Data protection experts are needed to indicate exactly what needs to be done and to ensure that technical tools actually comply with fundamental requirements set by law. The workshop will run for a full day with an invited talk from a Data Protection Authority in Germany (to be confirmed). Submissions The DPPT’15 Workshop (co-located with IFIPTM 2015) invites submissions presenting research on all topics related to data protection and privacy including but not limited to one or more of the following: - Technologies addressing Data Protection and Privacy - Technical mechanisms to ensure Data Protection and Privacy and address its concerns - Algorithms addressing Data Protection and Privacy concerns - Methodologies to protect Privacy rights - Impact of the Data Protection legislation and regulations on technology solutions - Ethical, social and legal aspects of Data Protection and Privacy - Harmonizing the global legal regulation on Data Protection particularly addressing the differences between the EU, the US, and other countries - The effect on Data Protection and Privacy in the cloud due to the nature of the cloud eco-system - Privacy requirements - Addressing Data breaches - Government and Law Enforcement Agencies rights and powers to access information in the cloud - Organizations’ privacy policies - Issues regarding data compliance DPPT’15 welcomes submissions of a 5-8 pages paper on any research topic related to the themes and the topics mentioned above. This should describe: a scientific research contribution and not include marketing material or position papers for new research ideas. Submission will be via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dppt15) and will be reviewed by at least two reviewers from the workshop organizing committee and conference PC. Papers must be submitted as a single PDF file, formatted using the LNCS format. Papers accepted by the workshops will be published as short papers alongside the main conference proceedings in a volume of the Springer AICT series Important Dates Paper/abstract submission: 1st of March 2015 Notification date: 16th of March 2015 Camera ready papers due: 20th of March 2015 Workshop date: 29th of May 2015 Workshop Organizers and Reviewing Committee Main Organizers Rehab Alnemr, HP Labs, UK Carmen Fernandez Gago, Malaga University, Spain Co-Organizers Niamh Gleeson, QMUL, UK Massimo Felici, HP Labs, UK Ronald Leenes, Tilburg University, Netherlands Anderson Santana De Oliveira, SAP, France Siani Pearson, HP Labs, UK Dimitra Stefanatou, Tilburg University, Netherlands |
