The Feminist Paradox: Women and Artistic Identity
Guest editor: Ahu Antmen
KADIN/WOMAN 2000 welcomes propasals for papers and books reviews for its forthcoming new edition, to be published in 2016.
‘The Feminist Paradox’ is a term that is used to define the distanced relationship of women to feminist ideology and identity. One of the fields in which this paradox comes to the fore explicitly is the art world, where women’s gender identity is very closely intertwined with artistic identity. Although feminist ideology has been effective in the struggle against the exclusion of women from art history and has been instrumental in the campaign to improve the subordinate position of women as artists, many artist women seem to regard feminism as an obstacle to artistic identity. Can feminism really constitute a drawback to a woman’s artistic identity? Are women as artists bound to the dilemma of gender? What kind of connections can we find between physical, psychological, social experiences and artistic expression, and how do these relate to the differences between art made by men or women? Does a feminist identity pose a conflict to the expression of individual artistic expression? Keeping in mind the different cultural perspectives in relation to varying frameworks for women in the 2000s related to class, ethnicity, culture, what kind of new issues come to the fore in the field of artistic practice? Can we talk of connections between forms of ideological struggle, political activism and new forms of artistic practice in relation to feminism as a vast platform that can include LGBTI individuals, and men, as well as women?
