The International Forum on Solid Waste (FIRS) is organised by the Instituto Venturi Para Estudos Ambientais, Escola Politécnica da Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos – UNISINOS and LACIS - Laboratory of Built Environment, Inclusion and Sustainability/FAU – University of Brasilia.

In 2013 the FIRS became an annual event, where in the even years it will always be held in his hometown, Porto Alegre (RS), and in odd years will be itinerant. With the motivation to promote the exchange between scientific production and public and private investors to encourage the emergence of new technology-based companies on the recycling market solutions and better management of waste picker organizations.

The FIRS consolidates itself as an important scientific-technical event held in Brazil on solid waste. It presents a broad overview of the subject that ranges from academic studies to the government and business vision. Its main goal is to contribute to the creation of an environment to share knowledge and experiences, strengthen awareness, as well as promote the establishment of a market for recycling and recovery of waste, turning these into value and incorporating the diffusion of policies and programs that promote sustainable trade relations.
