The journal of Personal and Ubiquitous Computing is hosting a special issue on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Privacy. The IoT is attracting widespread societal interest. It also brings with it serious risks to privacy. Mitigating the risks occasioned by widespread sensing and data collection is key to building societal trust into the IoT. Current industry solutions emphasize encryption, but there is more to privacy than confidentiality of data at rest or in motion. Furthermore, encryption often won’t stop industry accessing personal data, and metadata can be as or more revealing than data itself. This special issue seeks to open up the design space and consider what more is involved in addressing the privacy risks occasioned by the IoT. We invite original and adventurous contributions that explore and elaborate the core privacy challenge from multidisciplinary perspectives. Papers are invited from multidisciplinary perspectives.
