Call for Papers
3rd International Workshop on
Business Models for Mobile Platforms (BMMP11)
Access and Competitiveness in Multi-Sided Markets

In conjunction with the ICIN 2011 Conference
Berlin, Germany, October 7, 2011

Theme
The platform battle in the mobile internet and telecommunications industries is raging harder than ever before. Mobile platforms refer to mobile devices’ operating systems, mobile network protocols, mobile services and applications, and so on. Through platform ownership, companies position themselves as central gatekeepers in the mobile industry.

Because of mobile platforms, the business models of IT and internet companies, mobile operators, telecommunications vendors, service and content providers are being turned upside down. The success of mobile applications and devices is strongly dependent on the specific platforms that they have chosen. Users become locked in, and user data is increasingly collected, through mobile platforms. Industry leaders become those who exploit bottlenecks and apply two-sided market strategies to maximise profits. Policy makers and regulators are increasingly concerned about access to mobile platforms and the competitiveness of the mobile ecosystem.

The 3rd International Workshop on Business Models for Mobile Platforms calls for original papers on these topics. Papers may be of an empirical or of a conceptual nature. They may deal with the characteristics of successful business models in this field, the emergence of new mobile industry architectures, and the competition and collaboration between media, IT, internet and telecommunications companies regarding mobile platforms. The presented research may focus on individual platforms and applications, as well as on cross-platform comparative studies.

Workshop Topics
The workshop is multidisciplinary, and specifically encourages research papers on the following topics:
• Network effects and two-sided markets in the mobile industry
• New revenue (sharing) models
• Choosing and multi-homing between multiple platforms
• Modelling app store strategies
• Customer ownership, user data and privacy concerns
• Context awareness platforms
• E-reader and e-book business models
• Mobile urban service platforms
• Traffic and mobility platforms
• Platforms for the Internet of Things
• Mobile service platforms and back-office
• Virtualisation and platformisation of mobile networks
• Access to mobile platforms and regulatory implications
• Standardisation strategies of mobile platforms

Registration and Paper Submission
Registration and Paper Submission are through the EDAS system at http://edas.info//N9907.

Papers for BMMP must be written in English and submitted electronically through the EDAS system. A short (50 word) abstract is required on registration of the submission. A detailed review manuscript should then be uploaded for review by the Technical Programme Committee. Detailed instructions for authors on using EDAS are at http://edas.info/doc/authors.html.

Review manuscripts should be between 1000 and 1500 words long. They should include relevant figures and tables describing results and should indicate how the manuscript will evolve into a final paper. The BMMP Technical Programme Committee reviews all manuscripts for relevance, content and originality and it is important for this peer review process that review manuscripts are of the length requested. Review manuscripts and full papers should conform to templates that can be downloaded from http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/pubservices/confpub/AuthorTools/conferenceTemplates.html.

Full papers should be no more than 6000 words long. The BMMP11 workshop proceedings will be published (electronically) within the ICIN 2011 conference proceedings and individual papers will be indexed within the IEEE Xplore digital library. Authors who plan to present an accepted paper must complete their paid registration at the speaker rate by the stated deadline. There is no refund for cancellation but substitutions may be made at any time prior to the event. Speakers must register at the speaker rate even if they are a student. The speaker rate is only available to accepted presenters in the programme (one presenter per paper). Co-authors participating in the event should register as delegates.

The BMMP11 workshop proceedings will be published within the ICIN 2011 conference proceedings and individual papers will be indexed within the IEEE Xplore digital library.

BMMP reserves the right to exclude a paper from the programme and from the workshop proceedings and from distribution after the workshop if the paper is not presented at the workshop.
