CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on:
SMART ENVIRONMENTS AND COLLECTIVE COMPUTATIONAL INTELLIGENCE FOR
DISASTER MANAGEMENT
http://www.derby.ac.uk/computing/research/jaihc

Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing (JAIHC), Springer
http://www.springer.com/engineering/mathematical/journal/12652

****************Guest Editors:
Professor Nik Bessis, University of Derby, UK
Dr Eleana Asimakopoulou, University of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom

****************Important dates:
Submission Deadline: December 16th, 2011
Notification of Acceptance: 10th February 2012

****************Objective of the Special Issue:
Stakeholders in disaster management settings often find the effective and efficient utilization of emerging technologies quite a
challenging process but very frequently a critical computational inclusion to the intelligence required for protecting individuals,
communities, their environment and critical infrastructures. The special issue is dedicated to the dissemination of original
contributions that are related to the theories, practices and concepts of smart environments and emerging collective
computational and collaborative technologies for the specific purpose of improving intelligence when managing natural or man-
made disasters. In particular, the special issue is focused on the applicability - for the purpose of managing disasters - of
technologies that can support autonomous adaptation to complex and messy situations caused from these, highly dynamic
contexts. Various methods and technologies including simulations, multi-dimensional decision modeling, data mining, swarm
intelligence, smart spaces and sensors, context-aware, situated and pervasive computing, geographical information systems, ad-
hoc mobile networks, wireless communications, grid and cloud computing, social networks and crowd sourcing are a smart
technology means to enable a more informed decision making to mitigate and prepare for, respond to and recover from growing
occurrences of disasters.

****************Recommended topic areas include, but are not limited to (contextualized):
o Ad-Hoc (Social) Networking Analysis, Business Continuity and Recovery
o Architectures, Discovery, Retrieval, Scheduling, Allocation, Monitoring Artificial Intelligence, Self-
adaptive Ant Colony, Swarm and Evolutionary Agents
o Critical Infrastructure Threat Detection, Monitoring, Management and Recovery
o Critical Reviews on ICT used for Disaster Management
o Critical Reviews on Computational and/or Collective Intelligence, Ambient Intelligence
o Data/Text Mining, Data Clustering, Graph Partitioning, Collaborative Decision Making
o Enabling Distributed Technologies including Grids, P2P, Cloud, Crowd sourcing, Data Mashup,
Social Networking, Web 2.0, Geographical Information Systems, Early Warning and Alerting Systems,
Sensors, Robot Networks, Smart Spaces and Environments, Complexity and Autonomous Adaptation,
Ad-Hoc Mobile Networks, Wireless Communications, Pervasive, Situated, Context-Aware Computing
o Multi-objective Optimization Techniques, Complex Event Engines and Reasoning
o Ontology Management, Semantics, Web Services, Multi-Agents and Formal Concepts
o Programming, Middleware, Interfaces and Methods for Interconnection and Interoperability between
Heterogeneous Networks and Devices
o Security, Trust, Service Reliability, Identity Management and Privacy
o Stakeholders Structures and Dynamics, Needs Analysis, (Dynamic) Risk Mapping and Vulnerability
Analysis, Contingency Planning, Policies, Public Awareness, Resilience, Hazard Identification,
Monitoring and Assessment, Urban Risks, Public Safety and Disturbance
o Transparency, Locality and Scalability Issues in Middleware for Pervasive Network Computing
