"ART/VIEW"
“We cannot look around our corner: it is a hopeless curiosity to want to know what other kinds of intellects and perspectives there might be. [...] But I think that today we are at least far away from the ridiculous immodesty of decreeing from our angle that perspectives are permitted only from this angle.” Friedrich Nietzsche[1] The 2017 International Fine Arts Student Congress theme, Art / View, aims to explore the interactive relationship between these two considering expansive purview present-day arts. Our students’ starting point in the selection of the theme was the transformation of the concept of art through different perspectives and different cultures. Western art takes its form at human sight since Renaissance. God-centred world perception of Medieval Age gives place to the human-centred one. Central perspective is coined by Renaissance: nature is represented from the place that human stands, in accordance with human eye. The art of Renaissance is under the gaze: spectator contemplates the work of art by facing it and the gaze is long, prudent and full of silence. But the world is accelerated by modernity: long and prudent gaze at the work of art is replaced by a quick glance that extinguishes the viewer’s body in front of the picture.[2] However, the art is no longer exalted following postmodernism. The viewer’s look disperses in the art object and the viewer as a subject is dissolved. For instance, one can move around an installation, touch it or move it; or one can be a part of an interactive theatre play instead of merely watching it. The conventional relationship between artwork / viewer or spectator / performer becomes invalid and the limits between them disappear. The valid one is experiencing the artwork instead of watching it. The congress aims at underlying the content of the view in the present-day arts as well as its incoherent but interactive oscillation in the dynamism of cosmos and everyday life. The view is spread around everywhere, it splashes, it multiplies, it translocates. The art is now open to interaction instead of spectating: it is intercultural and public.
