Special Issue of "Automation in Construction":

Title: Smart Infrastructure, Construction and Building Internet of Things

Scope and Aims:
Once just a buzz-word, the Smart City concept is now receiving significant attention from public authorities, private companies and academia, with billions of dollars of investment being made in US and global cities in recent years. Smart infrastructure, construction and building (SICB) systems form the backbone of our future Smart Cities. These systems are based on the integration of basic infrastructure like roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, and other constructed facilities with distributed smart sensing systems, information and communication technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Arguably, an effective IoT network is a key factor in delivering integrated, intelligent digital infrastructure solutions, making cities better for those who live in them as well as those who run them and those who do business in them. The IoT is an emerging technology creating a massive world-wide network of interconnected physical objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, with the ability to transfer data over the network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. The rapid development of the IoT is concomitant with the emergence of cloud computing, Big Data, robotics, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), wireless communications, radio-frequency identification (RFID), semantic technologies, etc. This dramatic growth is impacting several scientific and engineering application domains.
Among different domains, the IoT technology is becoming a core to next generation SICB systems. In this context, the next big revolution will involve interconnected IoT-based maintenance, condition monitoring and operation of infrastructure systems, also creating a system of systems. Because real-time data-driven management systems are an imperative for future cities, research and development efforts in these areas are critically needed. The intent of this special issue is to invite scholars, researchers, engineers and other innovators to collectively display their state-of-the-art knowledge and their cutting-edge innovations in the areas of smart infrastructure, construction and building Internet of Things (SICB-IoT). All submissions should consider the practical application of the SICB-IoT through industry case studies, case surveys, experiments, and empirical validation.

Revision and re-review (if required): October 31, 2017
Final decision due: November 15, 2017
Final compilation and submission of Editorial/Introduction: December 15, 2017
Publication of the special issue: January 2018


Submission Format and Guideline
All submitted papers must be clearly written and contain only original work, which has not been published by or is currently under review for any other journal or conference. Papers must not exceed 25 pages (one-column, and having at least 11pt font size) including figures, tables, and references. All papers to be published in this special issue of Automation in Construction should include discussion and conclusions regarding the potential benefits and/or implications of the presented research on the construction industry and/or construction processes.
