TEACHING WITH CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS: A THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS

Overview: In an increasingly aware and critical environment, topics with any level of controversy are being skirted or abandoned completely leaving today’s students with a shallow understanding of some of the most important discussions. This book seeks to address the need, even the necessity, of teaching with controversial subjects so that students are emboldened to ask important questions, and seek important answers; so that teachers may model and support the same depth of exploration to these topics as to other, less controversial subjects. Submissions are sought in a variety of formats and across all content areas. Authors outside of traditional education areas are encouraged to participate.

Target audience:
In-service and pre-service educators; teacher preparation program faculty; research faculty in the area of pedagogy, sociology, urban education, history of education.

Contributing authors may consider:

Specific controversial topics and their place in PK-12 education
Case studies of effective usage of controversial topics
Lesson study of actual curricula utilizing controversial topics
Theoretical support for the necessity of controversy to advance quality education
Research on outcomes of usage and/or avoidance of controversial topics
Position papers for/against the use of controversial topics in the PK-12 classroom
Comparative analysis of depth of learning of controversial topics
Framework for preparation and implementation of controversial topic lessons
