Publication issue: January/February 2021

The integration of 5G networks with other technology advancements, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and edge computing, can fundamentally transform the way we use the Internet and conduct our business and daily lives. Many diverse services, including real-time autonomous machines, safety-critical health applications, and augmented/virtual reality-based applications, are expected to be supported using 5G cellular networks. This is in part due to the low latency and high bandwidth provided by 5G to carry data needed by AI/ML algorithms to perform real-time analysis, reasoning, and optimizations for these applications. All these capabilities, however, do not come trivially. The scale, complexity, and diversity of these applications, the dynamics and diversity of their network traffic, and the unique challenges with cellular networks (e.g., fast, time-varying statistics of wireless channels) all present unique, multi-dimensional network management challenges that need to be addressed. No wonder researchers and
practitioners are looking to AI to automate the management of the complexity and scale of 5G cellular networks, as well as to address the challenges with meeting the stringent service requirements of the future applications that will run on these networks.

This special issue of IEEE Internet Computing focuses on AI-powered 5G services, including, but not limited to:

Innovative services (e.g., smart cities, autonomous vehicles, IoT, and drones) enabled by AI and 5G
New ways of delivering existing services in 5G to improve user experience, efficiency, and costs
Use case studies on AI-powered, low-latency 5G services in the entertainment, healthcare, transportation, communications, and manufacturing industries
Innovative edge, cloud, and IoT solutions enabled by 5G technologies
Network API for innovative 5G services
Cybersecurity with AI/ML automation on 5G networks and applications
AI for 5G infrastructure monitoring and alerting
Network automation using AI/ML for improved resource utilization in 5G cellular networks
Smart 5G networks enabled by network slicing
Open source efforts (such as O-RAN) that support AI/ML on Disaggregated Radio Access Networks for 5G
Roles of AI in public and hybrid clouds with 5G applications
Papers with a strong networking component will receive the most consideration, as papers must fall within the general subject area of the magazine. The special issue is scheduled to be published in the January/February 2021 issue.
