PinSoDa 2012: 1st International Workshop on Privacy in Social Data

Overview
--------

One of the most fascinating challenges of our time is understanding the complexity
of the global interconnected society we inhabit. Today we have the opportunity to
observe and measure how our society intimately works, by analyzing the big data,
i.e, the digital breadcrumbs of human activities sensed as a by-product of the
ICT systems that we use. These data describe the daily human activities: for instance,
automated payment systems record the tracks of our purchases, search engines record
the logs of our queries for finding information on the web, social networking services
record our connections to friends, colleagues and collaborators, wireless networks
and mobile devices record the traces of our movements and our communications.
These social data are at the heart of the idea of a knowledge society, where decisions
can be taken on the basis of knowledge in these data. Social data analysis can help us
understand complex social phenomena, such as mobility, relationships and social connections,
economic trends, spread of epidemics, opinion diffusion, sustainability, and so on.
The opportunities of discovering knowledge from social data increase with the risk of
privacy violation: during knowledge discovery, the risk is the uncontrolled intrusion into
the personal data of the data subjects, namely, of the (possibly unaware) people whose data
are being collected, analyzed and mined. Privacy intrusion jeopardizes trust: if not
adequately countered, they can undermine the idea of a fair and democratic knowledge society.
The purpose of this workshop is to encourage principled research that will lead to the
advancement of the science of privacy and data protection on social data.

Topics of interest to the workshop include, but are not limited to, the following:
– Privacy-preserving analysis/mining of social data (e.g., spatio-temporal data, query logs data,
transactional data, social networking data, ...)
– Privacy-preserving publishing of social data (e.g., spatio-temporal data, query logs data,
transactional data, social networking data, ...)
– Anonymity in location-based services
– Context-aware location privacy
– Information hiding in geospatial data
– Interdisciplinary approaches and studies (e.g., law, economy, sociology, etc. )

Paper Submission
----------------

Paper submissions are limited to 8 pages. Submissions should be formatted in the IEEE 2-column
format (http://www.computer.org/portal/web/cscps/formatting). All papers will be double-blind
reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance, significance,
originality and clarity. Papers that have already been accepted or are currently under review
for other workshops, conferences, or journals will not be considered for PinSoDa 2012. Link

Please ensure that you follow the submission guideline (http://icdm2012.ua.ac.be/content/submission-guidelines)
to allow for a double-blind reviews. All accepted workshop papers will be published in a separate
ICDM workshop proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society Press.
