International Multidisciplinary Privacy Award -- Invitation to Nominate Your Paper

Deadline: November 10 2011

It has been recognized that in order to achieve consistent and meaningful progress in privacy, anonymity, and data protection, diverse stakeholders - regulators, lawyers, privacy professionals, technologists, service operators, and others - have to work together in order to understand and incorporate the requirements and technical/process constraints of each constituency. However, research in these areas continues to be fragmented, with each constituency focusing on its own set of issues and solutions. The goal of this award , the "CPDP international multi-disciplinary privacy research award" is to promote and reward multidisciplinary research, in order to advance the investigation of the new ideas in privacy and data protection.

Description
The award, to be presented at the annual Computers, Data Protection and Privacy (CPDP) Conference held in Brussels at the end of January, will be given to the authors of the best multidisciplinary paper that describes new ideas in privacy and data protection. Eligible papers need to have been published or accepted for publication between November 1st 2010 and October 31st 2011.

Papers eligible for the award need to be co-authored by representatives of at least two different scientific disciplines, one technical, one non-technical (e.g., a lawyer and a computer scientist, a cryptographer and a policy researcher, an economist and a technologist). Preference is given to papers where authors combine their expertise to address both technical and societal issues. The topics considered are broad and include, but are not limited to the subjects below:
* Anonymity
* Data minimization
* Legal assessment of digital rights
* User and device authentication
* User controlled security and privacy
* Innovative use of cryptography
* Standardization of privacy and data protection technologies
* Data protection legislation
* Privacy enhancing technology
* Trust in the digital economy
* Economics of privacy and data protection
* Other adjacent topics

Eligibility and Rules
Participation is open to researchers affiliated with Universities and non-profit institutes. Participants should submit original papers co-authored by at least two researchers with different areas of expertise that have been published or accepted for publication between November 1st 2010 and October 31st 2011. Authors should state their disciplinary background and affiliation in the application. The maximum length of the submission is 30 pages. The papers should address both societal and technical aspects of a problem and outline novel approaches to privacy and data protection. Review papers are not accepted.
