GOALS
------------
SWITP aims at exploring a Future Social Web where things play an active role as social agents, building a personal life memory, a sense of personal identity, and ultimately a social intelligence and behavior, based on their interaction with users and with their interrelatedness with other things and people both in the real and in the virtual world.

Obviously the field of Artificial Intelligence has a lot to contribute to this emerging field, while at the same time new challenges and issues have yet to be defined and explored.

The SWITP workshop wants in particular to investigate and discuss how Artificial Intelligence techniques and methodologies can contribute to this vision, looking into novel opportunities, challenges and open issues for AI in this context. The goal is to provide a forum for proposing innovative and open models, applications and scenarios, as well as new frameworks and methodologies for moving towards this envisioned future.

SWITP focuses on the social aspect of the Future Internet of Things. A sibling workshop, AI@IE 2012, focuses on AI problems and approaches while building truly intelligent environments. If that is your area of research, you may want to check out their site (http://www.ai4ie.de/index.html).

SWITP aims at providing an open ground for discussion and exchange among researchers. For this reason we encourage the submission not only of ongoing research work, but also of demos, try-it-outs, and "open challenge" notes. For a description of these alternate types of submissions see the SUBMISSION section below.

QUESTIONS AND TOPICS
--------------------
Some broad questions we wish to consider and discuss are:

1. What is Social Intelligence? How can AI support and foster it?
2. How do social concepts (such as community, friendship, group knowledge) extend to things?
3. Which Intelligent Services can be designed over a Future Social Web involving both (intelligent) things and people?
4. What are the benefits of connecting things and humans in social structures?
5. Which interaction paradigms are needed in order to allow social exchange between humans and things?
6. How can physical and virtual worlds be merged and represented consistently?

FORMAT
-----------------------
We welcome three different types of submissions:

- Research papers (max 6 pages, same format as ECAI main conference) presenting novel ideas and frameworks and/or ongoing research work.

- Demos and Try-it-out: anything people can play and tinker with, and that supports a future vision of a Social Web of Intelligent Things. These can go from prototypes to interactive mockups. Research teams are also welcomed to present short questionnaires to those that experiment with their proposals to have feedback about it. The submission consists of a short research note (max 2 pages) describing the approach that will be presented, the vision it embodies, how the interaction will take place, and the expected feedback.

- Challenges: researchers are also welcome to submit significant challenges, in the form of open issues or questions, that they would like to discuss with the workshop participants. Submission consists of a short research note (max 2 pages) describing the challenge and the reasons why it is believed to be relevant to the community, as well as proposing discussion topics that may help analyze in depth the issue. The accepted challenges will be pre-distributed to the workshop participants so that they may start mulling them over.
