If you would like to ask further information about the project or if you want to participate in this call send the required materials to virginia@perypezyeurbane.org (look at the paragraph “how to apply”) What we call for The final outcome of your contribution will be a feature/ emblematic story with a length of maximum 500 words on one of the three topics. The piece of writing should be enriched with link and made suitable for being read on the internet. The article has to be written in standard english. The selected article will get a payoff of 120 euro. We will prefer to receive a pitch/ short summary of your idea and be able to make a first choice starting from there. Text should be sent in a word document (.doc) or text file (.txt). You can find samples of previous publications in the column User generated culture http://mag.studio28.tv/mag/category/rubriche/user-generated-culture/ Which are the topics We are looking for three short-essays/articles about three topics: 1- interculturalism 2- education and training 3- borders Read further for the description of the required angle 1) Interculturalism It was 2011 when David Cameron, British Prime Minister, declared the failure of multiculturalism. In Spring 2013 there will be a variety of celebration events of the Edict of Milan, better known as Constantine's Edict: it was the law through which the Roman Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity across the whole Empire. These are just two starting points. Discuss what “multiculturalism” means. Is there a difference between “interculturalism” and “multiculturalism”? Is “tolerance” a nice word? Use cultural policies and cultural objects as interpretative tools, tell us stories that underline your point of view. 2) Education and training Recently EU started to work with EU Member States to develop the concept of 'key competences' – the knowledge, skills and attitudes that help people gain personal fulfillment, employability and enable them to take part in society. These include the 'traditional' competences like mother tongue, foreign languages, basic competences in maths and science, and digital competence, but also the more 'transversal' ones such as learning to learn, social and civic competence, initiative taking and entrepreneurship, and cultural awareness and expression. At the same time, Europe is facing cuts on lower and higher education. Why education and training are important tools of the construction of identity? Tell us inspiring stories of education and training strategies that overcome cuts and difficulties. 3) Borders Zygmunt Bauman once wrote: “Spontaneous borders”, consisting in the refusal of an encounter, rather than a structure of concrete and barbed wire, play a dual role: as well as having the purpose of separating, they also have the role / destiny to be the interfaces, thereby promoting meetings, interactions and trade, and ultimately a fusion of horizons cognitive and daily practices”. Which is the meaning of “borders”? To what extent culture and cultural policies are actors in meeting and clashes around the concept of borders? Do you have an interesting story of a border that became a bridge? How to apply You can pitch your story sending an email to Virginia Fiume, editor in chief of Studio28 Magazine virginia@perypezyeurbane.org. Highlight in the object of your email: “call for papers – topic n. [number of the topic 1= interculturalism/topic 2= education and training/topic 3: borders] The deadline for sending your proposal is 20th of february 2013– 1 p.m. (Italian Time - + 1 GMT) Select the “issue” that you would like to analyze and indicate it in the object of the email Few lines (maximum 10 lines/150 words) expressing the key idea behind your research/story telling. You should give us an impression of the angle from which you want to observe the topic, the Institutions/People/Organizations that you want to mention, few links that you think you will use to create an interactive text, suitable to a digital magazine. We are interested in stories. A very short bio, including websites of organization that you are involved in For every topic we will choose just one story and we will send an email to all the people that will contact us, whether their story will be selected or not. Consider that even if your article will not be selected for the specific section of the magazine, we could ask you to write a contribution for other columns or for further editions. Each author that will get his/her story selected will obtain a payoff of 120 euro , once the article will be published on the magazine.
