WORKSHOP SCOPE

The healthcare environment is generally perceived as being information rich yet knowledge poor. There is a wealth of data available within the health systems. However, there is a lack of effective analysis tools to discover hidden relationships and trends in data. Knowledge discovery and data mining have found numerous applications in business and scientific domain. Valuable knowledge can be discovered from application of data mining techniques in health systems. However, data mining techniques can be applied to create a knowledge rich healthcare environment. This workshop will provide a common platform for discussion of challenging issues and potential techniques in this emergence field of data mining in healthcare system.

Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in Health Systems (KD & DMHS) is an emerging field where researchers from both academia and industry have recognized the potential of its impact on improving health system by discovering patterns and trends in large amounts of complex data generated by healthcare transactions.

Data mining helps to discover interesting business insights to help make business decisions that can influence cost efficiency and yet maintain a high quality of healthcare. Data mining has aided in several aspects in health systems including disease diagnosis, decision-making for treatments, medical fraud prevention and detection, fault detection of medical devices, healthcare quality improvement strategies and privacy. This workshop will facilitate collaboration among different disciplines including medicine, clinical studies, embedded systems, and computer science. This workshop will briefly explore the potential use of classification based data mining techniques such as rule based, decision tree and artificial neural network to massive volume of healthcare data.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE

• To report the latest advances in data mining research for solving health care related problem.
• To educate healthcare and medical professionals who have access to interesting sources of data and problems but not the expertise in data mining to solve the problems effectively.
• To empower participants in recognizing the potential applications of data mining techniques in healthcare.
• To serve as a critical and essential forum for integrating various research challenges in healthcare domain.
• To promote collaboration among researchers from academia and health industry to enhance the state-of-art and help define a clear path for future research.
• To bring together researchers as well as practitioners from all three different groups in the healthcare system (payers, providers, and pharmaceuticals) to talk about their different perspectives and to share their latest problems and ideas.
