Call For Papers

CFP: 19TH SOUTHWEST ENGLISH SYMPOSIUM
trans [inter] disciplinary humanities conference

HYBRIDITY

PLACE: Arizona State University, Tempe
DATE: February 28th to March 1st.

Our theme for this year’s interdisciplinary SWES conference is hybridity; its attractions, distractions, contradictions and complications.

Definition: Hybridity is a capacious term used across disciplines to signal different kinds of mixing, mutating, and collaborating. The word calls to mind an in-between space in which heterogeneous elements can interact, whether they be different cultures, technologies, languages, or species.
Of particular interest are presentations that encourage audience participation and discussion, and contribute closely to the conference theme and to questions concerning aspects of the following:

Possible Topics:

Hybridity in the Humanities: historicism, humanism, transhumanism, literary criticism, postmodernism, intertextuality, film studies
Hybridity and Literacy: English as a Second Language, cross-culturalism, multiple literacies
Hybridity and Academia: interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies, hybrid epistemologies, ontologies
Hybridity and Identity: gender studies, race studies, postcolonialism, border studies, monster theory
Hybridity and Technology: cybernetics/cyborgs, emerging technologies, game theory, digital humanities
Hybridity and the internet: mash-ups, re-mixes, blogging, wikis, Creative Commons, hypertext
Hybridity and Teaching: multimodal and mutlimedia pedagogies, English for Special Purposes, Writing in the Disciplines, hybrid classroom, plagiarism
Hybridity and Environment: sustainability; animal-human relationships, ecocriticism, ecofeminism

This conference welcomes 250-500 word abstracts for sessions, panels, and/or roundtable proposals from graduate students, postgraduates and early career scholars. Because the theme of the conference is inclusive and interdisciplinary, it provides focus for a dialogue while encouraging the creative connections across several areas of graduate student scholarship. Creative pieces will be accepted if they are accompanied by an explanation of how the work contributes to the conference theme.

Submission Deadline December 1st 2013 -- Send Proposals to: swes.asu@gmail.com
