Social Justice and the City: Implications for Race and Equity

The City, Culture, and Community Ph.D. program invites graduate students to submit papers to our third annual Social Justice and the City symposium with keynote speaker Dr. Mary Pattillo (Professor of Sociology and African American Studies, Northwestern University)

Theme and Topics:
This year’s symposium seeks to understand social justice in urban settings in the United States with a focus on equity and racial implications. We intend to create an interdisciplinary space that can bring together scholars, students, and community members to engage across lines and further current conversations on race and equity in America. This symposium invites scholars to present their work from a variety of perspectives, theoretical frameworks, and methodologies. We are interested in how scholars frame issues of (but not limited to): social justice, intersectionality, social stratification, mass incarceration, race relations, health disparities, educational inequities, systemic violence, housing, and other issues of equity.

Scope:
As the academy continues to evolve, interdisciplinarity proves more and more a necessity. The 2016 City, Culture, and Community symposium, Social Justice and the City: Implications for Race and Equity, will provide a forum for graduate students to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue on topics related to justice, race, and equity.

Submissions:
Conference submissions are open to graduate students pursuing Masters or PhD.
We welcome viewpoint papers, literature reviews, journal articles, area exam sections, dissertation chapters, etc. An abstract is required by December 1, 2015. Final papers should be submitted by February 13, 2016. Presentations will be organized either in panels or as individual presentations. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by January 5, 2016 and presentation format will be indicated. All submissions should be directed to TulaneCCC@gmail.com.
